I took this pic about 11 AM this morning between Cherry Rock park and Rotary park. Someone peeked their head out as I was riding away.

I just shook my head a few weeks ago when some talking heads with the city said that the transient/nuance problem downtown is getting better. Really? Maybe during the day, but when I ride at night, I have never seen that many different groups. I did a headcount last week and it averages about 15 individuals I see camped out after dark each night in about 6 different areas downtown. Not all are sleeping but most have their camp setup and ready for the night. I have also seen many camps along the bike trail underneath picnic shelters. I’m not sure who is providing the messaging folks data or what they are being communicated, but the problem has gotten progressively worse since June. Not sure what the solution is, but lying to the public about it and ignoring the problem isn’t a solution either.

  1. Not a bad idea, I have been pushing the City Council to allow Camping in select public parks for more than a year. We do have some parks that would be great for allowing camping, one being Elmwood Park, Falls Park, and Sertoma Park. The revenue generated can lead to marketing the city’s natural wildlife, nature, and history, i.e help to save the Brockhouse Animal Collection by building a new state of the art Indoor and Outdoor Nature Theme Park with the Taxidermy as the star attraction. This allows for hunters to also donate and place further their private collections for display also. A ‘Business Improvement District” called Explore Sioux Falls would be a great idea. I once pitched a tent in Elmwood Park a few years ago to bring back memories of my boyscout years.

  2. “I once pitched a tent in Elmwood Park …” LMAO! Did you get arrested for indecent exposure?

Sorry, I couldn’t resist that line.

  3. In the first two weeks of September, there was a guy who was camping/sleeping under the 41st Street bridge adjacent to the bike trail near OG. He positioned himself right up against the wedge between the slanting rocky landscape and the bridge itself. He had his bike and trailer up there, a pillow, a cushion-type mattress, and a blanket, and often slept during the day. I don’t see him anymore, but imagine the dreams as cars and trucks roar right above you, or how about encased earthquake nightmares….. #FindingYourWedgeInLife

  4. To be expected. Mayor Putin would otherwise jail them. Homelessness is still minor compared to the rest of the country. We should start to get acquainted with Trump presidency. He owns the Supreme Court and soon the Electoral College. Pacifist citizens will prompt an authoritarian dictatorship. Get your dual citizenship with Canada before Trump builds a wall.

  5. Pacifist because it will take a civil war to depose Trump. Red MAGA caps are revolutionary war king uniforms. Blue is democracy. Take sides and fight for what America was meant to be. Me, I’m non-partisan. I want peace from political cults. Dump tea in the Sioux but protect all MaryJane.

  6. “E-bikes might be too fast, but at least they are quiet, so they won’t disturb those camping along the bike trail”….. 🙂

  7. The American Dream: Living in a tent along the bike trail with your e-bike. #TwoAmericas #TaleOfTwoCities #ClassTwo

  8. I walk Yankton trail park a lot (5 days a week) and am starting to see several people sleeping in their cars and trucks.

  9. The local Rip Van Winkle wakes up for the first time in 20 years and says: “What’s happened to my coveted bike trail?…. It now has people camping out on it and “quiet motorcycles” are now allowed on it as well”….. 🙁
