After seeing this banner ad today on their site, I assume you will see at least a couple of full-page ads from Mike. Also the Argus endorsement will be on Sunday. I have said that Sunday is the make or break day for the mayoral candidates. I also expect to see some MY VOICE articles about both candidates. Not from me though. I think endorsement letters from friends of the candidates is childish, even more childish then this blog. They appeal to the apathetic voter and insult the intelligence of informed voters, people who actually take a few minutes out of their day to study the issues and the candidates, people who haven’t forgot that we live in the greatest democracy in the world and in order to keep it that way, go to the voting booth informed.

  1. I know, Todd’s letter yesterday had a total of two comments. One was about Mike being a bankster and the other about Epp keeping his nose out of SF’s business.

  2. I’m just annoyed at how many Huether letters are printed in comparison to how many Staggers letters are printed. Most of the time reputable newspapers attent to print equal number of letters for both candidates… but I guess the Argus just can’t even be bothered to hide their obvious bias.

  3. Costner I picked up the paper yesterday there were equal numbers. At least have a valid complaint and I would be right there with you.

  4. John is right, I think they have been pretty fair about it, even though some days they have more of one then the other. I don’t think they matter really, I think people stop reading them after awhile.

Kermit has a direct mail piece coming out today, one interesting point I found was that Kermit spent a little over $4 per vote in the general and Mike spent over $19 per vote. And this is a guy who wants to invest the taxpayers money in SF to help pay for progress. It looks like Kermit is a better investor to me.

  5. Well I’ll admit I don’t see the printed version, but online today we have:

    2 pro-Huether letters
    1 pro-Staggers letter (kinda)
    1 anti-Staggers letter

That is a 3 to 1 ratio towards Huether. I assumed the Argus actually printed the letters they post on their website, but maybe that isn’t always the case.

Several days ago I believe it was four pro-Huether letters to one pro-Staggers letter mixed in with a letter about creationism and one other unrelated ramble.

Even the pro-Staggers letters they choose aren’t all that engaging, and although I have never been a fan of such endorsements, I have a hard time believing the best letter the Argus could select was one that rambles on about the duty of voting and then includes the one-sentence long, incredibly compelling reason to support Kermit of “because I said so”.

  6. Scott,
Yesterday got a really creepy robo call — from the Staggers campaign. It starts off with something to the effect of “Do you approve of Obama’s performance as President?” to begin with. Then asks a series of questions …. one of them darned stupid. “Are you part of the tea party movement?” Uh, if someone answers “Yes” on the being ok with Obama, do you think the robo call could skip the “tea party” question? Some people got the robo call and it was significantly shorter.

What ever the case, it was creepy and odd.

  7. Jackie-

I agree, I have discussed this with him. But you also have to realize, Mike has been energizing his base, Obama supporters, he even said in a debate the other day ‘Yes We Can.’ I hate robo-calls and push-polling, but Kermit didn’t start doing this until the other day, Mike did this before the general election. I say fight fire with fire. When you were a kid and someone starting beating on you, would you fight back or just take it? Kermit isn’t gonna take it. I think he swallowed the pill long enough, I actually think he waited too long to fight back. I knew Mike hired Hildy from the beginning, I broke the story, and when I asked him about it, he admitted it to me to my face. I wonder why it took so long for the MSM say something about it.

They are both being partisan, oh well.

  8. Scott,

I understand robo calls. That is part of the political landscape nowadays, and usually I hang up on them. I just find it odd that the Staggers campaign is asking about Obama’s performance as a launch. What does this even have to do with Sioux Falls mayoral politics? If he’s going for the tea party movement type voter, I’m truly turned off.

If he’s investing money in this, he should know I’m not the only one confused and turned off with the questions/ logic behind the survey questions. It comes off very creepy and very odd. He’s not winning my support this route.

    Jackie

  9. I agree. He should have stuck with the grassroots approach, and if he lost, oh well, at least it would not have been partisan on his part.

I don’t support Kermit because of the tea party or because he is republican. I support his because he is honest and won’t do the bidding of special interests. In fact in the 16 years he has been in office he has accepted not special interest money. That say a lot.

Not sure who will win on Tuesday, and I have to tell you, I am just as tired as they are.
