Huether’s Event Center Plan

Gotcha! Huether finally admits that all his bullshit spin and talky-talk was just that;

“There has been no plan presented. There’s been none. There’s only been dialogue in terms of a potential vision of what it could be,” he said.

The dialogue – much of which Huether shared with councilors behind closed doors – included the $99.5 million facility to be built near the Arena and possibly tearing up nearly half of Earl McCart Fields for parking. The plan will also require a public vote. As residents discussed support and concern about a downtown location Monday night, there was confusion about what location the $500,000 would study. Jamison asked Huether for clarification about the location.

“There has been no plan presented to the people,” Huether responded. “So Councilor Jamison I can’t answer your questions because there is no plan.”

“So then to be crystal clear, this $500,000 is essentially another study,” Jamison said.

Like I said to Mike on a repeated basis in emails and on this website, he has NEVER had an Events Center plan, and finally, once put up against the wall by Jamison and Brown he had to admit it.

And what’s up with Hildy stealing Carter’s thunder?

This was a logo I designed for Carter in July.

I’m trying to figure out how this group came from nowhere? Who is really behind it? Hildy? Huether? This is a little suspicious to me. Their first post was August 28th;

Steven C. Hildebrand Downtown is a great entertainment district. Restaurants, bars, clubs, shopping and lots to do. Washington Pavilion, Falls Park, special events and soon, the re-opening of the Historic State Theatre. This is where the Events Center should be!

  1. IMO getting it done RIGHT is a more important issue to who does it.

    Carter has good ideas.

    Steve has a lot of experience promoting good ideas.

    Looks like a team to me.

  2. Well Carter thinks you should have put a link to the other actual group that he started on Facebook ;D It would be nice however if Steve would have realized there was already an official group online, and that my group was the one that the Argus linked to online. I’m sure we will be talking soon. I wasn’t able to go to the meeting last night, but I’m excited to get BIDSF going.

  3. I concur that the two should merge and there’s definately some other players who want this project done correctly as well.

    and L3wis, you’re wrong. HisMan has a plan. One that he is currently balking at releasing to the AL:

    http://www.argusleader.com/article/20100914/UPDATES/100914035/City-won-t-share-drawings-other-info-mayor-used-in-private-events-center-meetings

    So, why would he not want to share his “vision”, so that we can all sing Kum By Ya together as it becomes “our vision”??

    Answer: Because he is probably a lot further along with his non-plan plan than he is leading everyone but his new bestys (Litz, Entenman, Anderson, Rolfing, Aguilar) to believe. He has a drawing, schematics, a cost estimate and probably is real close to the “fly-through” CAD program video that he keeps gushing over. In other words, he’s probably hired an Architect already and might very well be holding their first invoice…all done prior to the vote last night.

  4. Sy. I listened to hisman mike yesterday afternoon on KWSN radio about 5 PM. You’re right. I think all his pieces are already in place, fly through cad program and all. At least in concept and location. What I don’t get is the divide between hisman and his man hildebrand. Something here just does not add up.

    Mr Hubris will again be on the radio today. KSOO’s VPU. Sometime between 4 and 6. I’d guess 5 to catch the drive-by crowd. I suspect it will be an exact replay of what I heard yesterday.

    One caller after yesterdays show commented it was very naive of the mayor to act as though he were appointed by God to construct this facility. In his divine wisdom he has it all figured out. What he fails to mention is the PUBLIC vote, as if that is somehow just not in the discussion.

    And on the seventh day, he shall rest.

    And another thing. Yesterday on VPU, Michelle Erpenbach was a guest. Another DT backer. She gushed on and on about how parking was not a problem for the 50,000 who attended Sidewalk Arts. 50,000? Who the hell dreams up these numbers? No fricking way. I’ve been at “events” with 50,000, and this was not even close. I think they must take a snapshot at the busiest hour of the event and take that guessed at number times 4 or 5. At any rate, extremely crude. Just like Lifelight.

    And I would guess no more than 1,000 at any given point in time were exiting or looking for parking. And keep in mind, the streets used for Sidewalk Arts were all easily accessible to ALL the city owned public ramps. Parking by the Pavillion never has been a problem. Parking by your proposed site on the other hand?????

    FYI Sy, Aside from parking I could be on board. You all just be up front and honest about the real prospects in that realm and I might be swayed. I still struggle with “Do we really need bigger and better”? I know, you say it’s for tomorrows needs, no todays. I’m not so convinced SF will experience the kind of growth you bigger and better proponents speak of. A while back in nearly back to back issues of the Argus the population of Sioux Falls was up 7,000 while during that same timeframe, jobs were down by 2000. Not exactly a good reason to come here and stay.

  5. “The average annual growth rate for Sioux Falls
    has been between 1.5% and 2.5% over the past five years, and the average annual growth rate for the MPO area has increased from 170,782
    in 2001 to 212,176 in 2008—a 24.2% increase
    over that seven-year period.”

    You could fill 3.5 of the proposed Event Centers with people who’ve moved into the area since we began this debate. Again, we built the 6500 seat Arena in 1961, when our population was all of 65K.

  6. Even if there weren’t 50000 at Sidewalk arts the 1,000’s that were there were still able to find a parking spot and walk to the event. Its not like people didn’t go because they didn’t think there wasn’t going to be any parking or traffic would be a little worse. If anything people need to start utilizing SAM to get Downtown to events like this. Other cities majorly push citizens to use their bus system to get to the performance or event center.

  7. poly

    Only a very few (15 or 20?) of the 12,000 people who would even consider to attend events are blue-hairs in 80’s era Caddies who’s decision to attend or not will hinge on whether they will be able to park within 100-feet of the door.

    Nothing personal – just plain demographics.
