Noem’s biggest supporter? (Ray Beldner “How Mao” Sewn U.S. currency, 2002)

It seems the rumors are true, as South DaCola predicted;

WASHINGTON – Republican Kristi Noem’s campaign reported raising more than $1.1 million from July through September, twice the amount incumbent Democratic Congresswoman Stephanie Herseth Sandlin collected.

Noem, a Castlewood rancher and state legislator, also leads Herseth Sandlin in cash on hand, with almost $777,000 compared to about $500,000 for the Democrat, according to figures released by each campaign Monday.

And who planted Snooki’s money tree. Hmmmmm.

The campaign finance reports, which detail contributions and expenditures, are not officially due until midnight Friday. Both campaigns declined to release the full reports until later in the week.

Can’t wait to see that cat run out of the bag. But here is a sneak peak;

The race already has attracted plenty of outside money.

The American Future Fund, a conservative group, and the National Republican Congressional Committee have combined to spend more than $700,000 on television ads and other activities against Herseth Sandlin since August, according to the Federal Election Commission.

The big national story circulating (that our local press seems to ignore) is that the RNC and other national conservative groups have been taking millions from Chinese corporate interests, the very people who take American jobs and commerce.

  1. I would just love to see one of these self proclaimed great politicians pass a law that prohibits accepting any money outside of the election area, ie; state campaigns, only money from that state (by state residents!). It would be interesting to see how the political spectrum would change without the influence of so much outside money.

  2. maybe she should take that $42,000 out of the 3 million that SHE herself contributed to the national debt, and pay it back.

  3. The local media hasn’t touched it because the AP, Factcheck, ABC News and others have thoroughly shot down the “Chinese money!” meme.

    Jim,

Interesting idea. Noem would likely have had more money than Herseth Sandlin back in June if they were only allowed to accept in-state contributions. Noem had a much higher percentage of her contributions that came from SD than Herseth Sandlin did at that point.

Noem’s camp is also claiming that all but around 100K of her 1.1 mil in recent contributions came from individuals. We’ll have to wait until the filings get posted to find out if that is the case or not.

  4. Money buys elections. Is anyone actually shocked by this?

We all know in a close race such as this, there is bound to be a TON of out-of-state money coming in. No single party is guilty of it any more than the other just as no single party is guilty of the *gasp* foreign money we seem to be hearing about any more than the other.

So the Chamber of Commerce takes in a little cash from foreign members and maybe some of that cash ends up in campaign warchests… so what. The AFL-CIO and other large unions do the same thing but for some reason they don’t feel they need to be up front about it, so in the end it is a moot point.

Frankly the Democrats are reaching on this one because in most cases most foreign nations would much rather have the Democrats in power than they would the Republicans anyway.

But the moral of the story is there is far too much money in elections these days and we all know it. However those that hold the money are the ones making the rules, so don’t expect this to change anytime soon. You had some progress made with McCain-Feingold, but then politicians worked to shoot holes through it and found loopholes to get around it. Then once the Supreme Court determined companies have the same rights as citizens the levee was broken and the piles O’ money came pouring in.

  5. FC – even if your link is true, isn’t taking one penny from foreign interests deceitful? I have said all along, we should publicly fund elections, no money from corporate interests, just from taxpaying voters. Of course the media would cry because they would lose out on $$$$ from advertising revenue, but it is the only fair way.

  6. If SD collected sales tax on those political ads – it would probably balance te budget and enablke the stimulus funds that have been diverted away from education to be used for their intended purpose. But why would a conservative legislature want that? An educated voting populace I mean.

  7. Yeah, why tax advertising and luxury motorcycles at the same rate as milk and eggs. Ludicrous. Right?

  8. Sure they have , the commies are all behind Republicans!
Boy are you brainwashed bad. seek help from the OBama spell before your saying “All hail King Obama”

  9. Helga – I don’t take these comments to seriously from the neo-cons. You have to remember they are supporting someone to write laws for our country that doesn’t obey them herself.

  10. That is true, they do think laws are for everyone else.
Keith mapped out more of the money trail tonight. And isn’t it convenient that Supreme Court Justice Scalia has a son, Eugene Scalia, a partner at Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP who represents the U.S. Chamber.
The Supreme’s ruling worked out really well for the Chamber of Commerce.
And then there is that crook Karl Rove and his groups Crossroads GPS and American Crossroads. He has spent $56 MILLION on ads to buy the Senate and next the House with a $50 Million ad attack.

  11. Every major news organization has thoroughly discredited the US Chamber non-story.

Let’s assume that the number ThinkProgress listed are correct. That’s less than $1 million from foreign dues for the Chamber. That is 0.5% of the Chamber’s estimated $200 million budget. And that is being extremely generous with the numbers, most estimates have it at an even lower percentage than that.

Do you really think that they are going to use that $1 million for illegal campaign spending when they have $199 million that is perfectly legal to spend on campaigns? Of all the dumb things I’ve heard and seen this election season, this one is right up there.

Please, keep running with it. Keep demonizing an organization that represents the people that actually employ people in this country. I’m sure that will go over great.

I thought the Democrats were going to run on the health care bill and how great it is, along with all the other wonderful things that they’ve been doing? Why the distractions?

  12. Non-Story? Someone should tell NBC who has been running with it for days and uncovering even more donors.

  13. Fox is probably the only network that is saying it is a non story. No one else is saying that.
The CC is using every dirty tactic they can. The CC has never cared about employees. Local CC’s might but certainly the national CC could give a rats ass about anyone but themselves and CEOs.

  14. NBC? Do you mean MSNBC? Matthews, Olbermann, Maddow and O’Donnell? The left-wing commentary shows? Seriously?

Here’s what the straight news outlets have found.

  15. DDC- My spam filter traps comments with links even if you are an approved commenter. I only check my spam cue a couple times a day.

  16. Ah, I see. I had a post disappear 3 times over at the Decorum Forum one time, so I know I’ve got some internet demons. Newland finally had to copy & paste it from the email notices that he gets when someone posts. I thought the demons might have been coming back.

  17. Spam filter is my friend. If you think comments on here now are a bit randy, trust me, w/o the filter you would be reading about pissing milf’s and illegal viagra prescriptions.

  18. Yeah, its incredible how much crap ends up in comment sections. Its hard to believe those things actually result in any revenue for anyone, but I guess it only takes a couple of suckers.

Anyways, what do you have against pissing milfs? 🙂
