I had to laugh.

Johnny Roastbeef told me there was a cake and pie throwing contest there the other night that ended in a unwarranted tackle.

LOL – very true. We used to love the old S. Minnesota location and always thought Sunshine had the best meat. For sentimental reasons we tried shopping at their last store in town a few weeks ago and it was truly a memorable experience:( We wont be going back

It’s another example of how a local, family-owned company sells out. Sunshine was my first job in high school. I worked with a lot of people who had been with the company for 10,20+ years because of the way they were treated and the benefits provided.

  3. Still my favorite grocery store, I only live a few blocks away. They added a liquor/wine department, and I will have to say, cheapest in town. I also rent my movies there. The people watching is also fun.

I walked into a modern day showcase showdown that night.

Downtown Sunshine is great. Just make sure you check the expiration dates.

  5. I see so many items there that are either close to or past their expiration date.

I tend to think that they move this product from their other stores to the Second Avenue store. Given that this store is located in a low income area, I have a real problem with this for MANY reasons………….

  6. I try to stick to the canned goods. Pickles, etc.

The expiration dates have become less of a problem now that it’s the only location in town, and it has a lot more business.

  8. What happened to all the different grocery stores that used to be in SF? Now there are 2 or 3.

  9. HyVee and Walmart crushed them. Super Target has a grocery store to, but it is kinda spendy. I have also visited the locally owned, yuppie, organic-something grocery store. It’s cool, but I don’t want to take out a second mortgage on my house to shop there:

If you really want an experience go shopping at Omars Market on Russell and Main. The shelves are made of wood, the “meat department” will turn your stomach and there are brands there that I have never seen before. It makes Slumshine look Yuppie.

  11. The old saying goes: “You can’t beat Omer’s meat”

Also, there’s still Andy’s on Cleveland and Franklin Food Mart on Cliff if you wish to patronize the old school neighborhood store.

  12. I have been to Andy’s. It was the only place in town that had Stokes Green Chile. It is the best green chile.

  13. Andy’s is creepy, and I have heard stories about Omar’s, I might have to make a visit. Franklin used to have calculator’s on the handles of their carts, that tells you a lot about the clientele they cater to.
