  1. There’s some blue but no red or white. Apparently, the GOP doesn’t support the red, white, & blue.

  2. It’s not totally awful, just not appropriate. I’ve seen this before from fine artists that try to do ‘design’ Termes is an incredible fine artist, and he should stick to what he knows.

  3. If you want native american flair to it, replace the spirit wheel with more of a dream catcher with a feather or something. This is brutally ugly.

  4. Looks like the cross of the Ku Klux Klan/Neo-Nazis white pride cross to me except orange and blue instead of black and white.

  5. I like it. I think it actually reflects the brutal, unsophisticated simplicity that IS the state culture.

  6. Sucks. It should have a taco johns and a b-1 bomber and williams & ree on it. And a big pile of gold, and hog confinements, and big dairy farms, and carp, and drunk drivers, and Sanford.

  7. It doesn’t have anything pertaining to SD on it. What was wrong with the old flag. They are wasting more time covering things of no importance. It is going to cost money that the state doesn’t have, in order to have new flags manufactured and buy the new ones to fly over the state buildings.

  8. The Flags will be done by prisoners at Springfield for .25 cents an hour. So not going to cost that much actually.

Fat Pat McIntyre is that you hiding behind anominous. If not then whoever you are you do a fine imitation of Fat Pat.

  9. I agree with Brom. When I first saw this idea I immediately felt a hint of hidden racism but I couldn’t put my finger on it. Then I remembered seeing similar symbology on flags used in the deep south bragging about white pride.

This is disgusting. And a total slap in the face of Native Americans. Whoever thought this was a great idea should be ashamed of themselves.

  10. Craig…that’s the medicine wheel. Right in the front. Medicine wheel. Forefront. Center. Main focus. Native American Medicine Wheel. The circular object in the middle. Round with a cross in the middle separating it. See it? The Native American Symbol? Yeah? So how is that a slap in the face to Natives?

  11. Are they claiming that is what it is supposed to be? Sorry I didn’t see a description in the article I read explaining what this was supposed to be.

I’ve seen about 1000 depictions of a medicine wheel throughout my years (I was raised on a reservation) and they almost always are colored four specific colors because the colors relate to the four types of people recognized by the wheel as well as the four directions (and in some cases four areas of the body and soul).

I don’t remember the Lakota term used for the four areas of the body, but unless the medicine wheel is made on the Earth from stones, it is almost always colored in four distinct colors (white, red, yellow, black). So if this is meant to be a medicine wheel, why not use at least one of the right colors instead of burnt orange?

Maybe I’m alone when I see a racist symbol… but I somehow doubt it. I’m not saying it was intentional, but I would suggest whoever designed this version and those who are pushing it forward haven’t done their homework.

It looks as if this was a high school art project contructed using MS Paint, which was then printed and the colors were filled in with a Crayola product. If they spent as little time performing research on the symbols used as they did actually drafting this mockup, then I can understand why it is so horrid.

  12. Craig – You are not the only one who noticed the white cross of the KKK. I did also, and I have gotten several emails about it. While I seriously doubt that was the intention of Termes, there are people out there that will misconstrue it. And You are also right about Native Medicine wheels, they are multi-colored.

Sheep – I don’t like our current flag, but I also don’t like this design either. Let’s just bury it.

  13. Looks like the end of a Loney Tunes cartoon. Good to know that the state leg. has nothing better to do. Like fixing the problem that made Rachel Maddow’s show last night. SD made her show and it made SD look bad. Everyone in SD gets 46 days to vote absentee, except if you live on a reservation, they get 6 days. But hey working on a new state flag must be more important.

  14. Our legislators waste more time on non-important things, than they do important things. Like the year they decided kuchen should be the state dessert, studying the Bible in public schools, etc.

  15. This legislative session is a classic – bible, flag, and tenure.
A blatant example of the GOP agenda – destroying the separation of church and state, waving the flag, and being anti-worker.

  16. I saw that. You know, they sure bitch a lot about how piss poor the pay is and how they work so hard, but they don’t miss an opportunity to extend their terms . . . I heard Pierre is partyland during the legislative session. I am considering opening a whore house there during the session . . . unless someone has beaten me to it?
