I was so mad last night I could barely type, so I figured I would sleep on it, and see if my words would become less barbed this morning. Still mad. As you know, there was a major power outage yesterday downtown, affecting some major businesses in downtown Sioux Falls.
Is this news? Certainly, I cannot argue with that. But some TV stations decided to go overboard and make it sound like DT was a total blackout and the entire area was blocked off to traffic due to the ‘Great Power outage of 2013’. I suppose it had to do with the fact that there wasn’t a blizzard or John Thune press release going on, so they had to create a disaster.
Was the outage bad? Sure. But claiming that all of DT came to a halting stop couldn’t be farther from the truth. In fact, several DT bars and restaurants were open. I work at one of them. The reports all but killed a normal busy Friday night. In fact at one point in the evening, our establishment was completely empty, 8 PM on a Friday night. Now, I can speculate that January usually isn’t a hopping month for us, but I can also speculate that the local TV media, once again, has blown shit way out of proportion.
I think what bothers me more is that when something like a power outage occurs, it is the TOP STORY, but when other important things happen in our community, the TV stations are in hiding, probably busy flying their drones or playing with their latest snowstorm buttplug thingy.
Did you know last week a small group of citizens addressed the Minnehaha County Commission and got them to back off in restricting petitioners? Well you would not have heard about it on TV.
Our local TV stations seem to be more concerned about scaring old people and precipitation then they are about real news (hate to piss off the city fathers in our town, they might pull their advertising). This ‘creation’ of news has got to stop. Good, solid news stories are all around you, heck, some get handed to you on a silver platter. Where a DT restaurant is going to cold storage there bagged gravy is not a news story.
The hysterical media system we relied on is not worth paying anything. As the MAJOR rags and airwave system fail us, we must be our own reporters I guess.
If Sanford doesn’t’t pay Kelo than it must not be ‘news’.
The funniest part of KELO’s “coverage” was when they went to the Red Cross, to see how many loft dwellers were seeking shelter there, and there were none. They should’ve went to the Clubhouse Suites to see how many of them checked in there.
I hope they get reimbursed from Excel for their stay-cation.
i’m sure they will be reimbursed, and xcel will go to the puc seeking a rate increase to pay for it.
Someone did cover the County Courthouse petitioners story. I don’t remember which station I saw it on though. And I think it was at noon or five.
Too bad about the slow night. I believe news reporters in general care very little about the consequences of their actions.
I assumed DT was completely closed because the report I heard was stay off Phillips Ave completely, no foot traffic even.

When it comes to downtown restaurants, KELO cares only about the Diner and Minervas. Kind of like the only band they have ever covered is Kory.

Dick Kelly was on Knobe after the Tuesday meeting you refer to. It was quite clear from his comments that he still has the same agenda regarding restricting petitioners access to a public building!

It was obvious that Commissioners Kelly, Beninga, and Barth, along with Ken McFarland and Bob Litz are using the 90 day review process to hide behind.
I wonder if their ultimate decision will be to restrict petitioners to the east entrance. The entrance that very few citizens use!
This place is so bought-and-sold it’s unreal. We know there are things to uncover and the news media typically take care of that… in other cities. Here? You have a corrupt city government and everything caters to a handful of large businesses and wealthy elites. The media themselves don’t want to upset their puppetmaster.
Another consideration is that there just isn’t a ton of news to report; this isn’t a large city and many things simply aren’t newsworthy. It’s getting better and better. But the real opportunities in this town seem to only be for people who show up in town with 6-7 figure sums of money to invest and to utilize^H^H^H^H^H^H^H take advantage of cheap labor.
I’ve decided that my next goal is probably to move back to Minneapolis and search for work there, I simply can’t make it on the fast-food wages they want to pay people here in professional jobs. I am starting to get to know people here and enjoy Sioux Falls and I really wanted Sioux Falls to be the place where my career really started to take off (remember, T. Denny himself came here from St. Paul, he did alright). But I’m not making a living, I’m throwing in the towel.

Speaking of Thune, I saw on C-Span this morning that as far as treating his staff fairly he is one of the top congress people. He only has an 11% turnover. There was a guy on that worked for the Washington Times(I think) that did an investagative report on the best and worst congress people, pertaining to the way they treat their staff.
I’ve been around the area long enough to remember when Sioux Falls actually had a newspaper and the owners of the two main TV stations fought it out everyday to find AND report actual news. What we have now is absentee owners phoning into the offices to get the latest cash-flow numbers.
These owners do not care what happens here, they don’t live here or ever plan to visit unless forced.
My favorite moment in KELO history was when they rolled out Doppler 2000 in about April of 1998. Then a few weeks later, they failed to warn the viewers in the Spencer, South Dakota area of a pending tornado, which became and still is the most significant tornado in South Dakota history.
I can still remember the “Weather Boys” bragging about how their new weather technology would make it possible to recognize developing “hooks” in the doppler radar, making it possible for them to step up the warning time. This failure probably explains why they stayed on the air non stop for 7 hours during “Tornado Tuesday” in June of 2003.

I am sure he does. I have noticed, especially from working at a certain beer joint DT, that employers in SD are good at ‘guilting’ their employees to work for them. It is a horrible practice. I could go into a rant, but I won’t.
Winston, remember when Janks used taxpayer money, or something like that, to buy hats for Spencer tornado volunteers? A couple of months later there was an entire bin of them at Goodwill. I wish I would have bought one, but I was laughing so hard, I had to leave the store.
BTW, not sure what KELO said after Friday, but we were so slammed busy last night it wasn’t even funny.

I was cracking jokes with tables last night about how dumb the tv stations are about scaring people. I cracked my precipitation/Thune joke with one table and they were dying laughing. I wonder if Stormland TV knows they are the butt of many jokes.

Thune has been showing up on CNN, MSNBC, etc. Waxing poetic, which sounded more like BS to me. I don’t know what he is going for. President in 4 years?
TV overplayed the power outage because they could have their minimum wage reporters walk to the scene so they wouldnt have to reimburse mileage. If it’s not close, doesn’t affect them, or something free from AP there’s no report.
Once a year the FCC accepts public comment regarding network TV. If they’re using public airwaves, they’re obligated to provide news. Unfortunately, more people watch networks on cable and public service has little respect now.
The future will be local news from sites such as this. DL probably doesn’t realize what he’s done for local awareness. Public interest non-profits will post on digital billboards leading people into pertinent web sites. The best and most affordable reporters are interested citizens posting on blogs. It’s already important to screen. Soon, it will be necessary to restrict to 50 words or less so there’s pertinent dynamic reporting. A local version of twitter.
I thought about filing a complaint with the FCC over this ridiculous and reckless reporting.
