Not sure what to think of this;
A former University of South Dakota law professor announced Friday that he plans to run for governor as an independent candidate.
Mike Myers taught health care law and elder law at USD for 23 years. He also worked in the early 1960s for the Argus Leader and the Sioux City Journal.
But it’s in health care where Myers has his most significant experience. He was CEO of Mayo-St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn., and an executive with other hospitals.
Myers has been an outspoken critic of the vertically integrated health systems reflected by Sanford Health and Avera McKennan, which he called “oligopolies.†And he said that health care and criticism of “corporate medicine†will be the crux of his campaign.
The Dems would be smart to get behind him and not have a candidate of their own. The amazing part is he is about 900x smarter then our current governor, and has given the middle finger to the political party system.
This will be fun. Dennis better get out his cod piece.
At this time I would vote for him.
Mike Myers is smart and knows what he is talking about. I probably am going to vote for him if he gets on the ballot.
This guy is entirely too competent. Is he sure he wants to run for governor?
HG – I kinda thought the same thing. But keep in mind, he is 77 years old, I am pretty sure at this point, he doesn’t care what the establishment thinks of him.
I share his concern for oligopolies, but unfortunately his candidacy will only help to divide the anti-Daugaard vote to the current Governor’s benefit.
He should continue to raise the issue, but he should never file his petition for Independent candidacy, because the day he does, Daugaard is guaranteed a win in the fall…. A course that is assuming that the Dems will have a candidate as well.

The Dems do not have a candidate and now have no need to find one, if they are smart that is.
Well, there is talk that Jarding is running for the Dems.
Winston, I saw the Jarding FB page last night, and busted up laughing.
DL, Jarding is a bright guy, but he has no name ID outside of true Democratic circles…. that’s the problem with his potential candidacy, but then that tends to be the initial problem for a lot of Democratic candidates.
Jarding could definitely liven things up. The first question to ask is, “Will he run for the House or the Governorship?”
Time will tell. His love for facts and numbers would probably better fit him for a gubernatorial candidacy, but like the Myers candidacy, can a law professor or a professor from Harvard win in South Dakota?
I have fantasized and played around the idea of MMM running for Gov, and putting Darrin ‘Quitter’ Smith up against Jamison. Isn’t it a little strange the mayor has been talking about the citizens of ‘South Dakota’ and not of ‘Sioux Falls’, and has not made a formal announcement about running for mayor. Hold tight doubters.
Frankly, I think Huether is pragmatically the best candidate for Governor for the Dems in 2014.
And now I know why I used the word “Frankly” because I really believe that Dennis Daugaard is the Frank Farrar of 2014. For those who do not know it, Farrar, back in 1970, was the last and only one to two Republican incumbent Governors to not be re-elected in South Dakota history.
Daugaard’s comment that the voters were “lazy” in not reading page two of the 2012 ballot, as the main excuse for why his initiatives went down to defeat, is an explosive sound bite which can be used against him next year, not to mention the failed initiatives himself.
Plus, if Huether waits until 2018, he will have to deal with Mickelson, the “John-John” of South Dakota politics.
Winston – if Heuther is the best candidate for Governor for the Dems in 2014, what does that say about the Dems?
You might be right about Daugaard, but thus far I’m not sure there has been any candidate mentioned that can overcome the overwhelming love the citizens have with their GOP representation. Combine his status as the incumbent with the fact he has a “R” after his name… and I’m not sure he can lose.
Sure the man has made mistakes and stepped in it a few times, but he isn’t nearly as controversial as Rounds or Janklow… and they were both re-elected easily. Heck, the media gets all weak in the knees when Daugaard decides to go skydiving to the point it is considered more worthy of airtime than any of SOS Gant’s antics.
It will be an interesting race, but right now I’d say the early on prediction is another term for Denny. Maybe something, or someone, will change that – but I’m skeptical.
