Apparently there was another incident this morning at the troublesome park. A lady with no legs had her wheelchair stolen, and she was left there to fend for herself. If it were not for a county employee that saw her, she might have laid in the heat all day.

Some say just outlawing alcohol at the park would solve the problem. My suggestions?

1) Remove the portapotties

2) Remove the picnic tables

3) Cut down all the trees, or at least trim them to a point where they do not provide shade

Make the park undesirable to people who want to ‘hang’ and the alcohol banishment won’t make much of a difference.

Drove by there just this AM. All the picnic tables were occupied. I didn’t notice any beverages because I was busy ogling my wife. It is a nice little park but you will not ever find me there. It’s right in the neighborhood with police/sheriff station, courthouse, and city hall and they drink alcohol in its vinicity right in wide open public view. I’d rather enjoy my drinks little bit more privately than that wee park.

Full employment ! Hire an attendant. Better yet, grant a malt license to a crony and sanction a beer garden.

I find it funny. The people who are drinking there have a right to drink there since nothing says they can’t. Could it be the fact that they are mostly Native Americans that has everyone afraid / disgusted. Jump on the racist bandwagon.

This park has been the home of goofs since the 60s. I remember going down town to the state and paramount theates to watch cheap movies, go to Hamburger Inn for a 25c burger and then walk up to the park to see the drunks still passed out. Its our heritage, call it Heritage Park. Be proud of it, maybe MMM will be there with Fiddle Faddle scooping up dog poo and picking up city paid for depends(he likes Socialism) and enjoying the local shop that’s still in the area. MMM keeps saying Trust the system, its hard sometimes, but trust the system. No thanks, a clown

Apparently Jeff Barth is also a racist. Just saw him on KELO talking about his new fence and saying “This is a delicate issue”. “THEY” have no place else to go. The drunk white people at Jazz Fest last weekend = good for the city. Natives at Van Eps = not so much.

  7. Adresses to”Park IT” :
You and your racist dogma is the reason for these problems. How about we cut the racism shit and deal with the issues. I don’t give a F%#K if their purple martians, their drunk in a public park creating a ruckus. We drop way too much policing time and money on this area of town.

What is delicate about this issue is worthless comments like yours which attempt to shove our heads in the sand or look the other way. You and people like you are race baiting, habitual victims who are codependent to the bad behavior of these people to keep perpetuating your racist lies.

SO A RANDOM CITIZEN stole the wheelchair of an elderly person and left them in the street? IS that the story you’re using to defend these people?

You to are culpable for their actions. You give them cover and a reason to keep destroying their lives. POOR, poor them because the rest of us are racist. They have to drink to kill the pain is what you’re saying?

Its 2014 and racism is being kept alive by people like you.

Barth is a jerko, there has always been the white folk at the van eps park and the falls park piled all over for the past 50 plus years. So you get some of the native americans that MMM didn’t seem to exist in his articles several months ago, where the hell are they MMM. I know, they don’t exist was his statement several months ago about Indians and cowboys. what a fake

Jeff is a bleeding heart socialist liberal, so I don’t think I’d label him as a ‘racist’ because he is concerned about a park full of drunks fighting and falling off of picnic tables (been watching any of the news footage Park It?). And I was at Jazzfest, there were people of all races drinking and having fun but I don’t remember seeing anyone dropping trow and droppin’ dookie in the park or falling off or having drunken slapfests that looked like an episode of “Bumfights” so I think you’re reaching here to turn this into a “racist” attack.

As LJL notes, the real difference here is how people behave when they drink. The drunk people at JazzFest are predominantly middle and upper-middle class folks who are educated and have a sense of obligation to work/family/society that keeps them from pissing on picnic tables, assaulting people with knifes, and stealing wheelchairs from the disabled. The people congregating at Van Eps Park? I’m going to guess that those forces aren’t as strong.

That’s not a commentary on race but rather a commentary on cultural attitudes towards responsibility and civility in a free society. I don’t believe that all Native Americans think alike any more than I’d believe that all caucasians think alike. But clearly, there is an issue with how the congregants at Van Eps Park are conducting themselves when considered as a group.

Like Lemming said, it’s about behavior, not race.

This problem has been happening all along. Now that people are seeing it first hand they want to raise the issue. It is better than having them piss all over Whittier Neighborhood isn’t it? Who are they really bothering? That lady whose wheelchair was stolen, she was drunk and passed out too. It wasn’t like it was your grandmother that was wheelin through and stole her chair. I am sure someone was watching out for it while she was passed out. This community has a way of taking care of each other.

  13. It appears to me your bigot list is the right place to be.

  14. I would like to know, being drinking in Van Eps park has always allowed drinking & people have been able to continually commit crimes there. Has there been & if not, why haven’t there been surveillance cameras set up, and of course really good lighting, to protect the innocent of these crimes. I have lived in Sioux Falls many years & just recently found out about this park & can’t believe what I have learned about this park & absolutely was shocked that all these can be happening, especially when only a block from the courthouse, jail & police station. It is really sad as well, that children and public have had to be exposed to such disgust in even broad daylight. Totally Wrong!
