Here is the full statement from tribal attorney Seth Pearman:
“Thank you again for coming to Flandreau to report on the Tribe’s marijuana announcement. On Friday, May 8, 2015, the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe Executive Committee, while in session, established a wholly owned limited liability company with the purpose of pursuing recreational marijuana and hemp on the Tribe’s reservation. The Tribe has not legalized marijuana in any form yet, and is in the process of preparing an ordinance to regulate any growth and consumption on the Reservation. It too has meet with several reputable companies to consult with the Tribe, and is finalizing selection of a company. The consideration of legalizing marijuana on the Reservation was prompted by an October 24, 2014 Department of Justice Memorandum regarding marijuana enforcement in Indian Country. (Attached) Economic Development is a paramount consideration of the Tribe, and the Tribe looks diligently into different ventures that would create economic stability for the Tribe and its members. As the Tribe continues to pursue marijuana legalization, it will provide more detailed information to the public.”

More, not less, restaurants for munchies. Food trucks with marijuana menu ingredients.
I know very little about pot use. Can law enforcement test for marijuana much like alcohol in blood test? Theres is no breathalyzer for pot correct?
Seems to me all the state has to do is set traffic stops outside the casino property and use a drug dog for traffic stops.
LJL, there’s drug residue on money. Enough that do pick it up but not enough for prosecution. There’s a pee test for drugs that doesn’t hold up in court if you take prescription meds. Marijuana THC passes through in 12 hours. It would be stupid to test for drugs due to the expense and volume of users. There’s no room in jails without releasing murderers and casino robbers. Best to go after the dealers but they’ll be safe on reservations.
Hey, how bout a stones tour (like for wine tasting)? Travel around the state reservation to reservation with an imposed cloud inside the bus between stops.
Seriously, make pot legal in SD. Then, no problems inside and between reservations. The whole state gains tourism. Lots of vacant hog barns become another Ag crop. A crop for winter months.
Brookings will go bankrupt if they decide to go after college students who are buying pot legally on the reservation and bringing it back to Brookings.
As for your hog barn idea, I had the same idea today when they said ‘Dakota Layers’ will have to kill off all of their chickens. Instead of repopulating the sheds, they could start growing Marijuana, legally in Flandreau.
For the record I’m for legalization as well, but with a kicker.
Since our governments insist on socializing so many aspects of our economy lets do this right.
Lets have the pot program completely grown,distributed and sold by the state. The state will not be competing with any (legitimate) business and will keep 100% of the profit. Farm labor can come from the prison system.
Want to grow you own OK. You will need to a $500 permit per plant per year.
If your arrested in public holding less than 2 ounces you will have to produce a receipt of purchase or a permit for growing.
If your arrested in public holding mare than 2 ounces, mandatory $1000 per ounce up to 10 ounces.
If your arrested in public holding mare than 10 ounces, mandatory 6 months jail for each ounce over.
