I was kicking it old skool on this one. There is a reason why I don’t hand draw many toons, it is a pain in the arse. First I have to sketch the idea, then I have to trace it with a marker, then I have to watercolor it, then I have to blow on the drawing (to dry it), then I have to scan it, then I have to clean it up in Photoshop, then I have to piece it together, then I have to lay it out and put in type then it’s back to Photoshop . . . I’m exhausted.

On the Brotherhood 2.0 show yesterday, John said “Why does Santa look a lot like Uncle Sam? I think they are the same person.” So that’s how I came up with this one.

  1. The two commentators in the first panel reminded me of Bill Lee, who had cartoons in adult magazines, such as Playboy. The wavy lines, in Uncle Sam’s face, also remind me of R.O. Bleckman, whose animation was featured on several irreverant T.V. commercials, in addition to his political illustrations in the the New York Times and Washington Post, in the 70’s. Your style also reminds me of Lou Myers’ work, which appeared frequently in East Coast newspapers and magazines. Keep up the good work.

  2. I love the old school look! Well done, Sir Scott!

My question is — why not just do the watercolor effect in Photoshop after it’s cleaned up?

Meanwhile, I’m getting into old school drawing, but scanning and using Illustrator and also liking drawing directly into Illustrator with a Wacom. Meanwhile, Tim, there’s a post on getting Vector effects free on the cartoonist blog.

  3. Keep it up with the simple crayolas, man – I love your free-hand style, dude!!! But then anything you people do is art to a non-artist art fan like me – damn I wish I had enough money for purchases and enough walls!!!!
