I’m trying to figure out what part of this tweet isn’t historically incorrect?
While I don’t think it is in bad taste, especially since everything he stated is TRUE (he left out indian killers), probably not the best statement about the 4th of July from the State Director of the Democratic Party. But it certainly isn’t offensive or ‘revisionist’. What is ‘offensive’ is the response from the SDGOP manure spreader;
SDGOP Chairman Lederman said, “Our founding fathers fought and died on the battlefield and forged what grew to be the greatest nation on earth based on the principle that we should be a free people, and that their fellow citizens should not be subject to taxation without representation.â€
White, Male, Property owners to be ‘FREE’ people. Women, slaves, Native Americans, and indentured servants . . . not so much.
“The South Dakota Republican Party and the people of South Dakota reject that kind of liberal revisionism that Democrats continually try to inject into our state.â€
As I stated above, I am still trying to figure out what part of Sam’s statement is untrue? Of course, it is easy for the SDGOP chair to cry foul while representing mainly conservative Christians while being registered to vote in Iowa (and doing business there) while lobbying for Muslims (he is Jewish). The heck with rewriting history, let’s just rewrite the rules.

Just because the party hasn’t released their platform to YOU, doesn’t mean they are hiding something. And stating the truth about our founding fathers is NOT bashing Independence Day, or Veterans, or whatever kind of group you want to pull out of your ass that you may think will be offended.
So let me get this right, this outrage from the SDGOP is coming from the same political party, which on a regular basis gives Trump one “Mulligan” after an other?
In order to hold onto their base, the GOP is playing the patriot card here, while their President is giving the farm to Putin…..

It’s not about historical accuracy. It’s about tone – the Festivus Airing of the Grievances take on the holiday. Lederman says America is a great county on the 4th, Parkinson says it’s flawed. Lederman knows his broader audience.

July 4th is meant to celebrate independence. It’s a time to come together as a nation with patriotic uniformity. Bringing in divisive issues is inappropriate. Try to wait for political party campaigns or election debates. Save your obsessions for a better time to make a fool of yourself.

Much of America is ignorant of this history, some because of inadequate educations, some because they lack the mental wherewithal to grasp it. And some grasp it, but do not have the moral courage to be reminded of the facts of the founding. The GOP in South Dakota regard racial oppression and deprivation as patriotic virtues.
It’s exceptionally stupid politically. It’s no wonder Dems can’t get up off the deck. Nothing like insulting the voters to win elections. It’s like a business that treats customers poorly. They don’t come back. You have to speak truth to power. You have to know what you believe and back it up. You have to find the best way to create an environment where civil and human rights are protected. These are all good things. Popping off on social media with inflammatory statements speaks to immaturity rather than coalition building. And, this can’t be stressed enough, it’s just dumb.

I agree with Patrick. I also hope they continue to wear their true colors on their sleeves for all to see so the good people aren’t duped into thinking the Democratic party line of thinking is pro anything but hate and discontent. God forbid people be proud of their heritage. And as far as the whole conquering, slave owning etc., it was all wrong. There are a lot of skeletons in almost every civilization’s closet. If you really want to talk about atrocities, and ones that are even more recent, let’s talk about the socialist / communist movements and its millions and millions of victims of the last century. I only mention this since the Dem party line seems to be falling right in line with those ideologies and practices. Perhaps a little more pride in nation and a little less shit talking on a national day of pride and remembrance.
The people most upset by this comment aren’t voting Democratic anyhow. Political parties today are increasingly defined by their national image. If Democrats want to win in South Dakota they need to spend less time worrying about message and more time organizing to win with a McGovern style of GOTV type of campaign. And until that is done, it is academic at best to worry about Sam’s message…. Although, it would probably be best for all politicians and their operatives to stay off of Twitter, Instagram, or whatever, unless it is something really positive or it makes for a gathering of their constituency…
