As I have joked in the past, some in legislature need to be evaluated for mental illness, and while I was being ‘sarcastic’ when I see crap like this, I sometimes wonder;

State lawmakers are proposing legislation that would allow people to carry concealed handguns without a permit in South Dakota.

The so-called constitutional carry legislation was introduced Friday. The proposal languished under former Republican Gov. Dennis Daugaard, but new GOP Gov. Kristi Noem offered support for such a law during her campaign.

Republican Rep. Drew Dennert is sponsoring a constitutional carry bill in the House. He says backers have the promise of the governor and support from the public and both legislative chambers.

Support from the Public? Bull . . . . sh*t!

How do you think this will make us safer? Allowing anyone to have a gun without a permit, or a permitting process is complete insanity. Also, how do you think this will help with tourism? If I was a major player in the Tourism industry, the Education system, or heck any business person in this state I would find a way to put a halt to his frightening legislation. We are not living in the Wild West anymore, and if my memory serves me, it wasn’t a very pleasant time. More guns, and especially guns in the hands of people who are not properly vetted is a horrible idea. How do these clowns get elected? Baffling.

Something tells me, however, that the ‘Greatest Generation,’ which defeated the Axis Powers, never hoped that someday its children and grandchildren would yearn for a Dodge City.

  3. I myself am the only one in my friends and family who does not have a conceal permit or own a handgun. And with that said, I could go either way on this change in law. If we do change this law, conceal carry should not be a right but a privilege like driving.

Many other states do not have a permit process. I say let’s change the law BUT use it as a tool to deter other crimes which this culture often commits.

Crimes that would revoke conceal carry would be: failure to appear, failure to provide liability insurance, DUI, DWI, theft, failure of child support, theft, so on and so forth with many other crimes big and small.

Make this info a part of our drivers license information which we SHOULD be doing now with DUI and DWI offenders. With a few stipulations to this law, we could keep many of the bad apples from conceal carry.

  4. Fluff, I have read many books about it. There’s a chapter in SF author Wayne Fanebust book about Pettigrew and the gun fights during territorial sessions in Yankton. Everytime I hear our current legislature talk about leniency on guns, especially carrying in the Capital, I always remember reading about it.

LJL, we have a process in place now that is not broken. I have often thought that gun licensing should be like the driver’s license. You should carry liability insurance on every firearm you own and you should have to take a ‘shooting’ test to prove you know how to properly use a firearm. Also, no more leaving guns in cars, they should always be in a secure place when not in use.

    Fluff,

Memories are something you recall. History is a product of actual recordation. And if you don’t know your history, then you are bound to repeat it. And if you rely soley on memory, then your short comings will assure that history will repeat itself in your time.

What does a permit really do, just serves as a tracking mechanism to see who is a conceal and carry. You already have to go through a background check to get a gun. You can also open carry in SD as many are aware, so putting your shirt over the gun is really no big deal and needing a permit is unnecessary. I personally believe the govt should stay out of just about everything in our lives as we depend too much on them.

Infrastructure, Military, some common sense regulations to keep average citizens safe but, most of its overboard.

Now you may disagree but, that does not make me a gun toting wacko but, fact of the matter is when someone is committing violence on you or another, the cops are at least 3-5 minutes away and that is too late.

Getting a drivers license does not stop DUI, car accidents, or using the vehicle improperly. I would agree with some sort of need to take a gun safety class or something but, the permit process is kind of a waste of time and money. My wife did it and it took 2 minutes and it was signed. Maybe that is a flaw in the current system I dont know but, we have a 2nd amendment right and no law should be created to infringe on that. You dont get a permit to pray to the God of your choice, exercise your freedom of speech, nor plead the 5th. I know the argument you all with throw out “well guns can harm people”, well so can freedom of speech ( pen is mightier than the sword).

Liberals have always asked for this little regulation or that little regulation, ban this, ban that, etc. They all say they support the 2nd amendment but, yet they will not rest until all guns are confiscated and illegal.

Places like Chicago have some of the strictest gun laws in the nation yet folks are popping each other left and right. You start taking away the rights of the good citizen to defend them, the bad ones don’t give a shit about laws.

Bottom line is you cannot legislate evil and someone intent on doing harm will. The reason we have a gun problem in this country, is the same reason we have a drug problem, and many other social problems, we as a society have decided life is not that precious anymore. This is always such a hot topic but, I believe this guy nailed it.
