As you can see from the label, it already says ‘Plant-Based’. It’s actually a selling point to people who don’t want to eat meat, but Dusty doesn’t think it is enough;

Representative Dusty Johnson is co-sponsoring a bill aimed at labeling plant-based beef as “imitation” meat.

The Real Meat Act proposed that beef not made from cows, be labeled “imitation” before or after the name of on the front package.

In a statement, Rep. Johnson says, “a plant-based creation isn’t the same as South Dakota beef. It’s a benefit of consumers and producers alike when folks have a better understanding of where their food comes.”

I’m wondering when Congress is going to finally pass and implement country of origin labeling and make it stick for beef? (It was passed in 2013 and repealed in 2015/16). If COOL was still in effect it would have a HUGE impact on sales of SD Beef (they would sell MORE), but Dusty seems to be concerned that people that are eating plants shaped like burgers are being duped.

LMFAO!

I propose we start labeling our lone representative in DC as an ‘Imitation’ Congressman.

    Congressman Nuance is an imitator with a spin.

    ( and Woodstock adds: “‘The Real Meat Act?’…That sounds like something you would see in Soho.”)

  2. Every ag product, meats both wild and domestic not grown organically in South Dakota is contaminated with neonicotinoids, glyphosate, dicamba, DDT, mercury, lead, cadmium, PFOs, E. coli, Shigella, Legionella and other toxins. That’s probably true everywhere in the United States. Country of Origin Labeling was repealed in 2015 to shield American meat from scrutiny.

    In countries that import American meats concerns are mounting that chronic wasting disease (CWD) and bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE or mad cow disease) have made their way into the food web.

    In 2017 beef products dispensed in South Dakota vending machines were recalled by the US Department of Agriculture after a routine inspection revealed Bovine tuberculosis. During that outbreak in South Dakota Republican former legislator Betty Olson blamed deer for bovine TB while praising the destruction of the cougars, coyotes and wolves that control deer. She wondered why Game, Fish and Plunder hadn’t slaughtered every wild critter in northwestern South Dakota.

    Rodeo stock were ultimately established as the carriers.

  3. The law I can’t wait to see come out is for how to label LAB grown meats. So far it look like the LAB grown meats will taste and look just like SD grown beef.

    WHERE’S THE BEEF? The beef industry is having nightmares. Dusty is working toward a future career as DC Beef Lobbyist. Plant based could lead to a less obese population. Send Kobe beef around the world. Keep soybeans here.

  5. DailySpin, a plant based diet doesnt mean it could lead to less obese people. The problem is amount of calories eaten vs. calories burned. Even plant based diet can consist of eating more calories than needed and even still eating very unhealthy. Not all vegan & vegetarian processed food is healthy.

  6. Erica, I would agree. I know a lot of vegetarians that are unhealthy, mostly because they eat too much pasta and processed foods. Over the past 6 months I have tried to limit my meat protein to only a couple of servings a week, and divide it evenly between chicken, fish and pork or beef, but mostly fish. My goal is to get down to just one serving of fish or chicken per week and concentrate on plant based proteins. I also only eat raw vegetables and fruits. It’s hard to find food that isn’t processed. I have lost about 40 lbs by doing this. The problem with red meat is that people over consume it. Did you know you are only supposed to consume 4 ounces of meat protein or less per day? Have you ever seen a 4 oz steak or hamburger on a menu?

  7. a 4 ounce hamburger is called a quarter pounder. most places have them. maybe not the fancy places though.

  8. LOL! You are right Scott! Sometimes I need help with simple math.

  9. l3wis, plant based meats are heavily processed. Look at the ingredients. Not a healthy choice and far too much processed soy (and corn, HFCs and now even starting with peas) in the American diet, especially for those moving to plant based foods. Better off eating meat just eat red meat in moderation and know where all your food comes from. Which is exactly why we need labeling laws of where meat was raised, slaughtered, and processed to make better choices.
