When Trump builds a border wall, the city gets frisky with bunker ramps and walls. Government, in general, only knows how to work with concrete. It’s sad that Sioux Falls is becoming known nationally for homelessness and starvation. The price of concrete could pay for tents and soup.
Look like it’s being done correctly THIS TIME. This is what happens when you try to do things “inexpensively” to begin with – vs. doing them PROPERLY. But why should you listen to me? I’m just an old bricklayer/ industrial concrete guy currently specializing in multimillion dollar soils stabilization projects all over the country.
BTW – maybe you could try doing the calculations @ how many thousands of tons of soil that wall is holding back before you throw out any claims of “overkill”. You know – physics/science.
Ruf, for the record, there was only a minor part of the wall that was defective, not the entire thing. The city went bonkers and wanted to fix the entire thing based on some Federal highway regulations. While you do know a lot and I truly appreciate your expertise, sometimes it is good to watch ALL of the presentations to draw a conclusion.

It’s only a matter of time before someone in town – with the help of pedal pubs – will promote a ‘Jimmy Hoffa Cement Tour.’ It will be like the ‘Beverly Hills Celebrity Homes Tours,’ except without an Arkansas Granny and a frying pan chasing you down some narrow and winding street. Geeks Romans, talk about overkill. Have you ever stood next to any of the structures you are attempting to use in your analogy? Did the Greeks build structures in deep freeze and thaw cycles?

The reason it failed to begin with is because there was a couple of rocks that were not installed properly and Porter worried about it at the time of installation. There was also ZERO maintenance done on the wall the entire time it was there. It’s funny how the city can spend thousands of dollars a year to brush sculptures with toothbrushes but can’t do simple maintenance and inspection on a retaining wall. Yes, this wall will be as solid as ever, but it didn’t have to be done this way. Just saying.
This was NEVER a retaining wall. It was never needed as a retaining wall. The original grave mounds were never at danger with this wall. It was built to ancient methods which have withstood centuries of freeze thaw cycles through out Europe and the even mountains ranges of the world.
This was a wall built to honor the ancient natives of our area and our parks department did not want it from the beginning so they refused to maintain it. Promises made to light it and honor it were never fulfilled.
This rebuild of the wall is being done because of the lies of several city officials and their contractors.
The rule is that for every two feet you go up with a retaining wall, then you are suppose to have a foot of perpendicular rock to the wall. But instead, they are just going to cement it all. And if there is any cement left, can’t we just use it to fill in those $1.5 million worth of holes at the Bunker Ramp?

Sorry to disagree with you guys but any time you put a road cut into a slope you’re gonna have to do something, whether it’s rocks or creep. I don’t fault Porter Williams project or work it’s just what you have to do. Go look at the 3′ high walls along 1st avenue south of 14th and you will see creep pushing them out after 100 years.
