Before I tell you about what I went thru (which isn’t that great of a story) I want to make it clear that I still support mask mandates (when shopping in public) and social distancing if eating out. I also think that the bars should limit patrons, because right now, it seems like they are a free for all. I also support vaccinations as soon as we can all get them. While my case wasn’t serious enough to hospitalize me and cause any long term effects (that I know of) it is very serious for people with underlying health conditions and other issues such as lack of health coverage, food security or employment.

While my illness probably wasn’t as dire as it is for other people, I can tell you one thing IT IS NOT THE SEASONAL FLU. All symptoms are much worse, and it lasts much longer. I was sick for around two weeks. Bad dry cough and headaches were my main symptoms. I also lost my smell and taste, and still only have partial back at this point. It is also hard to sleep when you have Covid due to chills or sweats, weird dreams and coughing/breathing. Like I said, I was fortunate to not have any serious breathing or lung issues, but I will say the worst part of the illness is the horrible headaches that last for days. I also did not receive any prescriptions. I basically battled through the symptoms with nasal spray, cough drops, lots of hydration, rest and Ibuprofen.

I was fortunate to have insurance and an employer who covered test costs and wages while I was sick.

The one thing I learned is that Covid could have been manageable not just nationally, or statewide but locally. We probably would not have had to close down a lot of things if we would have implemented a long term plan back in March so that businesses could stay open. I don’t know where I got the illness, but likely at work, but I do go out shopping so who really knows. The infection rate is so high right now I could have gotten it anywhere. I firmly believe that if Smithfield’s would not have had that large outbreak, we would have contained it pretty easily in Sioux Falls.

The most frustrating part about the pandemic is how we got to this place. If the Trump administration would have followed the pandemic plans left by the Obama administration and not disbanded the office we may have been in better shape than we are today. It also doesn’t help our country and state are led by lying idiots.

A part of me is relieved I got it once to experience and at least have short term immunity, hopefully long enough until I can get a vaccination. But I am also not naïve, I do realize I still am vulnerable and will practice all the same precautions I did before I got it. The way I look at it, I have been working in the office since it’s inception and it took this long to contract the virus, so the precautions I was taking at home, shopping or at work seemed to have mitigated it quite well and are a testament to mitigation efforts working if you apply them early and often as I did at work and while out in the community.

There is one important lesson I have learned from Covid, you have to take matters in your own hands if you want to keep yourself safe. No one else is going to save you. Leaders across the nation and locally have this enormous unwillingness to do anything, they call if ‘freedom’ I call it ‘incompetence’. This incompetence doesn’t have much affect on someone like me who has managed to stay safe, stay working and a roof over my head, but it does affect the vulnerable in the community. Leadership is not something I need either, I can easily make my way out of a wet paper bag. But government is not only for those who can fend for themselves, it is for those who need that extra help, that is what makes our Republic so remarkable, we help those in need and less fortunate. During this pandemic, we have failed these folks. While I count my blessings everyday since this started, even when I was in the middle of the floor coughing my brains out, I still felt awful for those who were not going to get thru this. Our supposed leaders failed us on this pandemic, and we all should be truly ashamed.

  1. Sorry for you. It’s believed (unproven) once you’ve had it, it’ll not return. Maybe good for you. However, it’s believed you can still be a carrier. The vaccine is coming. Even if only half are vaccinated, the virus could die because there’s no longer a favorable transmission. Perhaps political leaders haven’t handled this well. Had they, people would have stubbornly ignored. Also, causing major alarm could have been a bigger problem.
What’s important is we’re slowly coming around. There will be a long term effect. Where we were cannot come back.

  2. Thanks for sharing your experience. I wish you a full recovery! And I am ashamed of our “leaders”.

  3. OH THE IRONY….
You received the virus because of your behavior… It’s childish to blame other or believe a government, any government, can keep you safe from any virus. You admonished everyone for not expecting forced mandates, yet you obviously did not practice what you preach.

Thanks for providing as example of why this country is going in the shitter.

I’m sorry that you got the virus and glad that you made it through this. I wish you could make a full recovery from your foolish ideologies and take some damn self responsibility.

  4. Thanks for sharing your experience. Indeed, you are fortunate to have insurance that covers your medical expenses. This is not the case for most. I am very glad that you feel better and that you have passed the worst part of the crisis. Keep taking care of your health, we still do not know if it returns or you are immune. It is premature.

We must remember our current situation in the upcoming elections so as not to elect ignorant and insensitive leaders.

  5. LJL, your defeated leader set the bar for irresponsibility and so far har opened up 310000 graves. Your lack of empathy pales in the lack of social grace you continue to show. How little you know about others.

  6. Whoever you are today>
Amazing how you place blame on only those who you hate. A gaggle of morons and criminals were hyper focused on impeaching another moron and thief when this began, yet you’re so narrow minded you can only fault 1.
Again….if you think a government can save you from a virus, your childish. Our government can’t keep computer viruses out of its own government networks.

Furthermore, over 250,00 die EACH YEAR due to medical errors but that’s not a fact your able to grasp as it’s not a political topic that’s been shouted at you through glass. So save your breath about teaching others grace and try reading my posts a bit slower.

Your empathy is phony as you have no regard for the millions of babies killed in a year over a political game. I’m quite certain you’ve found joy when the people you’re told not to like have been infected, so save all that self righteousness for someone who believes you as I don’t because your devoid of any real meaningful thought which hasn’t already been shouted to you through glass.

Thanks for your opinion. As you can see, I’ll ponder on it’s validity.

  7. LJL is one of those who deplores lockdowns, but says nothing when it comes to possible martial law. I guess that’s why some are called deplorables.

  8. Yeah, criminalizing abortion would solve all these problems overnight. Like I said before, you really are a stupid f’ing prick.

  9. Don’t ever block LJL, we need his ignorance to shine through the lock-down his authoritarians are planning. His fearful leader is planning to overthrow the government so the Confederate flag pickups can continue roaming the streets.

  10. I got sick 2-3 weeks ago; supposedly I had the COVID-19 Virus, but it acted as any other flu – cold/chills, bad cough, loss of taste/smell, and one new symptom – Body Fatigue. I mostly began having symptoms 1-2 weeks prior, then after the worst, a few later, I was fine. I had not been wearing masks, but I am also not a person wanting to force them on anyone either.

I find it ironic, while all you ‘maskers’ are so up in the air over masks, and mad over how the state does not wear masks, but yet – you fail to see exactly what the State is doing, which is much worse than enforcing masks. “Read” the LAW and tell me what is going on…

I do not believe your ordinance is a mandate to wear masks. My reason behind this is the fact that your ordinance practically “exempts” 99% of all residents of Sioux Falls from the mandate itself, let alone, there is no penalty for not wearing a mask.

Then there is the Mayor’s “resolution” which is a tell all sign in itself – while it is only a resolution, a promise to do something, to respect people, it carries the same ‘exemptions’ as the ordinance, but it has a section (section 5) that instructs people to only patronize those businesses whom support the “Safer Sioux Falls Agenda” sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce itself. “YOU” are telling the people to pretty much report each other to the State or City Health Departments if you suspect them of carrying the virus (disease). So I respectively ask to NOT extend the ordinance, and amend the Resolution to ensure that NO RESIDENT slanders, misrepresents, let alone attacks anyone, or any business whether on social media or in public if they disagree with any such policy of that business.

“WE” are in fact being told thru our Statutes, Ordinances, and Resolutions to report anyone whom ‘we’ believe to be carrying, or to have carried the virus via Contact Tracing. And that to me, means our little “mask mandate” is NOT meant to mandate masks, but is to “mandate contact tracing” in order to place citizens (residents) on our public database of “known carriers”. Do we really want to self incriminate each other? Do we really want to violate a citizens 4th Amendment Right to feel secure in our persons, homes, property? Think of this before you vote to extend the “mandate”.

To prove my points above, I provide you the LAW itself ….

Look At the Power We Gave Our Government … We delegated authority to them to do the following ….

34-16-1. Act endangering public health as misdemeanor.
Every person who intentionally commits any act which grossly endangers the public health is guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor.

34-16-2. Release of disease germs as felony.
Any person who releases or spreads any disease germs intending thereby to accomplish the infection of one or more persons or domestic animals is guilty of a Class 2 felony.

34-16-5. Access of health officers to places where source of disease suspected. All members, officers, and employees of the state department and local boards of health shall have the right to enter any building,
conveyance, or place where contagion, infection, filth, or other source or cause of preventable disease exists or is reasonably suspected to exist.
34-16-24. Supervision of public health matters by superintendent–Action without board in event of immediate danger.

The superintendent of the county board of health shall have charge of and superintend, subject to the approval of the board, all the matters and things specified in this chapter. In case of immediate danger to the health of persons, the superintendent may act without consultation with the county board, for the prevention of such danger, and shall immediately report the action to the president of the county board and to the secretary of health.

§ 33.025 DISASTER DECLARATION. The mayor shall declare an emergency by executive order upon the occurrence of any disaster or emergency involving any natural, nuclear, humanmade, war-related or other catastrophe producing phenomena in the city which in the opinion of the mayor, causes damage of sufficient severity and magnitude to warrant extraordinary lawmaking authority. Notice shall be provided to the press by e-mail or facsimile, or any other means.

What these statutes, and City Ordinances really say – is that if the “government” suspects you or any of the citizens may have spread any contagious disease, they can in fact under the laws we wrote, fine you, penalize you, convict you of a crime.

FOR ALL OF YOU whom have gotten sick, whether from the Flu, a Virus, or any form disease; and you voluntarily went to get “tested”, and now since the Hospitals are classifying everything as COVID-19; that under the laws, the State is performing “Contact Tracing” meaning anyone whom was tested positive is being told to report any family member, friend, patron, client, citizen of which they have come into contact with, this places ALL PERSONS on a ‘list’ within the Department of Health Database.

Now – if the State finds you, or any related persons to be a Public Safety Hazard, and they believe any one of those persons spread the Virus, they can fine you, penalize you, to yes, even imprison you, let alone, they can mandate that you obtain a Flu or Virus Vaccine as a result of that punishment.

For those of you whom feel the State does NOT have this power, guess again, under our “emergency acts” they do have the full power to enforce such laws, ordinances, and regulations. You would be classified as a criminal if you do not comply with the law.

Are ‘we’ building a Statewide Database (national database) of known carriers in order to force the vaccine on people later?

How can no one see this?

  11. I use this site to clarify my views. It’s one step better than ‘fake news’. I’ve been corrected some. I’ll absorb and ponder LJL commentary. We’re entitled to individual opinions. It’s fundamental democracy.
Covid and Black Lives Matter have incurred dangerous civil unrest. Countries that are not democracy or republics handle such things fast and immediate. The US has the worst Covid. Southeast Asia is nearly clean. Russia and China have it under control. I’m not saying we should not be King or Communist but I am saying pandemics affect us more because of our political structure.

  12. So now we are believing Russia and China??? Really? Asia has it under control? From what I read, it seems as though they just aren’t getting it. I’ve been to Thailand, Philippines, Korea, etc….they are anything but sanitary, no way in hell they could control Covid. You maka me laff.

Gotta wonder, IF China did design this virus, were they able to create it in a way that wouldn’t hurt Asian folk as much?

Blaming Trump for this is a joke. Dementia Joe criticized him for shutting down air travel early. Pelosi and Cuomo were telling us it was no big deal. Fauci said masks wouldn’t work, wasn’t able to be transmitted easily, etc. Trump meanwhile started working on vaccines immediately, which is why we have them today. Keep smoking your crack pipes.

  13. It was Thomas Paine who said: “Give me liberty, or give me COVID.” Or, was that Palin?… (Noem or Kimberly Guilfoyle?)

  14. Palin says she can see Russia from her house. If you change the “P” to “St” you have Stalin. But don’t worry, Santa lives up there too. Merry Christmas everyone!

Change the “N” in Noem to a “P”, then you have a poem, but that is easier said than done. Such a change infers a capability to enter a word of literacy and logic. Happy New Year everyone!

Like Guilfoyle said: “THE BEST IS YET TO COME!” That’s right. It’s called: THE BIDEN PRESIDENCY! Happy 2021!

  15. Hey Mike Zitterich,
You sound like a crazy person. Maybe you should quit huffing whatever automotive fluids you drag your knuckles around in all day and open a window or something. Some fresh air might help with the delusions.
Also, when I get the Covid I’m going to tell them you and I are best friends and I hang out in your shop every day so you get on “the list”.
    You’re welcome.

  16. Don’t play scrabble with ‘Fear’.
News today is a new strain in England that’s 70% faster to get. It’s suspected but not proven the present vaccine works for the new Covid variant.

  17. I’ve considered a 60 day + 30 day extension to Thailand. Their ‘curve’ went to zero. It’s a 14 day quarantine at a 5 star hotel. Great hotels are $20 per night and no tax (no kidding). RT air is $800. Exchange is $1=35 baht. Taxi anywhere or street food is 50 baht. Thailand is a good place to quarantine but going thru airports might give you Covid. After 90 days, Covid should be tamed here. I’d retire in Thailand but I need VA benefits here.

  18. Thai people are so gracious and friendly. No guns and little crime or drugs. Traffic is horrendous but above ground public transit is fantastic. You don’t need a car there but some of the time a taxi. There’s passenger river boats with good service. What’s best about Thailand is NO REPUBLICANS or CITY CORRUPTION.

  19. Angry Guy – where did I attack anyone, so you feel the need to attack me for my comments, not very professional. If you feel the need to report me to the health department, then go ahead. If that makes you happy. You may need to calm down a bit.

  20. What about wearing cloths?

( and Woodstock adds: “Yah, young adult women shouldn’t have to…… Oh yah, never mind”…. )
