As I have pointed out several times over the years, I am still wondering where the original pedestal for The Statue of David went in Fawick Park, Downtown Sioux Falls?
In this article I wrote in 2002 for Etc. magazine, I mention the removal of David in 1997 and how the city fought to bring him back because they needed a new pedestal. My question all along is where did the original pedestal go?
No doubt that the structure of the original pedestal probably needed to go away, but it had granite inlays.
Over the years I have pressured current and former city staff where the inlays went. Nobody has said a peep. The closest I got to an admission they were taken was a person said to me, “Let’s just say some VIP in town has quite the treasure.”
I have also heard the granite placards were returned to the Fawick Family.
Either way, it would be nice to know where they went. Probably the same place the images to the Bunker Ramp mural went.

Imagine getting some granite placards in the mail.
I would hate to be the delivery guy who had to deliver the placards…. But granite, it is his job though….
I know where it is, but I am not going to say out loud. It is actually hidden in very plain site, near Downtown Sioux Falls in two distinct places. Yes, that means it was cut in two sections, and placed in withing the historical district, the original Town Site. I will though, provide a hint – Have you found all of the precious pieces of “artwork” within the original town site?
It’s Borders: South of 2nd Street, North of 4th Street, East of Main Ave, but West of the Sioux River.

From 1997 until 2017, so you’re saying from Monica until Stormy. History refers to that time period as the “Moral Years”. Currently, we are experiencing the Mural Years; and given the secrecy over the Bunker Ramp mural, one can only imagine what was drawn. Perhaps, we are back to some morals, sweaty selfie or not…. Come to think of it, maybe we could start a new trend – It could go vial -where people have a selfies taken in front of David with their heads as the fig leaf….
Were there words or images as inscriptions on the granite?

Say, are there still spare pieces of granite which might be dedicated to creating some of the vanity stops on the self-congratulatory sidewalk pantheon of fame on the 6th St bridge – The Walkway of VUOPM (“Vision” Using Other People’s Money)?

Or a big federal grant for repurposing / recycling building materials?

Look harder, pay attention to details, look where no one does, they are there, each marks each of the two former town sites, one north 3rd street, and one between 7th street and 10th street. Think people Think back to 1860,a and where the two towns once stood…got to view the city form its original layout…

I think back to 1860 often. Who’s going to win, Lincoln or Douglas? But then there was no McDonalds, no Starbucks, no Youtube… How did we survive without Youtube? And we had to rely on the telegraph to check our daily emails. Little did we know back then, in 1860, that we would soon all have to head for Yankton as well with some granite placards in hand like Dolly Madison saving the Washington portrait.

Has anyone seen my granite placards? I was going to use them to build a Flintstones style playhouse for my kids in our backyard.
