I guess the City of Harrisburg believes they have growth area rights to the Hwy 106 boundary and have appealed it at UDC meetings, getting denied. The City of Sioux Falls believes that the disputed area was agreed upon 10-20 years ago and that city taxpayers have invested millions to hook up to that growth area with public utilities.
Harrisburg may be seeing this as a tax valuation growth area.
But what makes this story so bizarre is that this fight has been going on for months with little to no knowledge by the public or the media, and the relationship between the two cities is ‘strained’ according to my source with the City of Sioux Falls.
Well, you know my feelings on open government, solutions to issues are NOT solved behind closed doors, and if this was out in the open, it could be resolved by now, instead we have to play petty games behind closed doors so the public doesn’t realize how much we really despise each other 🙂
I wouldn’t know who’s side to take on the issue, but I think if they had public meetings on it, they may come to an amicable solution, or better yet, just split the difference.

Watching the whole prison location debate from the cheap seats, my assessment has been that Harrisburg is textbook amateur government. Instead of bitching they should embrace the development and greatly expanded suburban tax base the prison and ancillary growth to their south will bring instead of playing the NIMBY card. I’m not privy to what’s going on with Highway 106, but any development there is truly driven by growth from Sioux Falls and not the other way around.
As for local media, we shouldn’t be surprised that you’re breaking this news. Unless there is a press release or a press conference, local media is too busy doing fluffy features and rare disease of the week stories.

because the city is so bad at relationships internally and externally all the other local cities despise having to work with CSF and our growth plans disregard considering the input of other cities and their residents so we end up with a mess of bitterness

A civil war maybe? Except, in this case, the North fights for slavery and Lloyd development. The South needs a prison for northern POW’s.
This could all spell trouble for Taupeville. It could be the next Gettysburg. I can already hear the Mayor’s famous Taupeville Address:
“Four score and seven years ago, I’m talking basketball here, I came before all of you sporting my new Air Jordans, tight jeans, a sport coat and white business shirt, and no tie to be found…. but…. Now, we are all gathered upon a great battle field testing whether this Walmart is better than the other ones, or whether anyone should be allowed to camp here to seek refuge from the political realities of our time……”
Andersonville, that’s a great name for the new South Harrisburg prison. Not being able to find your mommy at the 85th Street Walmart, however, is North Harrisburg’s prison. #Hari-bourgeoisNord
