Former City Councilor Big T wrote an excellent letter to the editor about how the citizens need to vote on the new parks’ expenditures.

I would agree, $77 million dollars in expenses needs to be decided by the voters and I am surprised that most of the council wouldn’t be pushing for a special election to approve these bonds. They will sit and cry and wring their hands about making these gigantic decisions when they can just easily call for an election and wipe their hands of it.

But the pool debate and some of the other debates the new council has been having has been soooo predictable. They pretend they are ‘concerned’ about the expenditures then vote for them anyway. They are NOT concerned and all these media games they have been playing (because someone may be running for mayor) is just smoke and mirrors. They have done this for decades before they have to do a big project. They promise all kinds of cost cutting and savings then once the project gets approved there are massive cost overruns and add ons. EVERY SINGLE TIME! Just look at the Ice Bunker Ribbon; Supposed to be a $4 million dollar project that turned into a $16 million dollar project (the donor must have needed a bigger tax write-off).

The council is going to make it ‘LOOK’ like they are on our side when it comes to financial concerns, but if they were TRULY listening, they would call a special election, but just like the predictability of their policy decisions, I will predict they will forgo the special election, and likely do an ILLEGAL advisory election with the Convention Center tying the two projects together to better SELL it to the public. I guarantee this is what they are cooking up. They did it with the Pavilion and Convention Center, it’s an old playbook.

Not only do we need to demand a special election for both projects we need it to be a LEGAL bond election where it only passes with 60% of the vote.

I would love to blog more about city politics, but the predictability lately has been a gigantic yawn. Oh, but I guess the mayoral candidates are all jockeying for positions, but I think the Skabs and their less then flattering boozer texts may be instigating all of this.

  1. If this went to a vote, I believe it would pass. Our indoor water options are extremely lacking and those two pools ARE old and outdated and it’s annoying to get to Midco. I want these things built, personally.

  2. And you make my point, let the citizens decide. If over 60% approve the bonds, then I would accept the results. All this arguing about the price tag is silly. Set the price and let the voters decide, then we can plan around what we need. Personally I think there is plenty of private facilities and I am not sure why my tax dollars need to be subsidizing someone’s exercise. I lost over 100 pounds in 3 years and I never walked into a gym the entire time. We seem to be under some illusion that we NEED indoor rec to be a healthy community. What we need to do is close more fast casual restaurants in town.

  3. Theresa needs to run for mayor. She’s our Trump, but in a likable way. #ComebackKid! #MissMobridge

( and Woodstock adds: “Yah, but what about those claimed $300 a month water bills, or is that like having Mexico pay for the wall?”…. 🙂 )

  4. These are exciting times. First, there is Thanksgiving, then the Holiday Season, and then Great Bear is open for 10 days. #WeHardlyKnewYe

  5. Since Trump got elected, everyone’s afraid to speak up. This is autocracy. If you can’t agree with city foolishness and fraud, you’ll get wasted and forced into Minnesota. There’s democracy and practicality there but income is low and cost of living high. There’s also up to a 9% tax rate.
The best thing for now is watch 4 years of Trump take away more civil rights and ruin what had been a tranquil economy. Perhaps look forward to the next election. The best way for Republicans to learn is pain. I doubt Trump will last his term. There’s military generals, secret service, cabinet, etc. who will do the right thing. Problem is the Vice President and most of the Supreme Court are incompetent. I suspect there could be Marshall Law or at least a Coup if/when Trump gets elected to another term.
As a private citizen without representation and one picture of the reigning king on the wall of my cardboard home, I’m looking for my next move. It might be overseas somewhere that’s not a nuclear target.
Trump is setting us up. Learn Chinese, Russian, and North Korean if you choose to stay.

  6. The Trump mess is only 55 days away. So, get your popcorn now so you can all watch it unfold because once it does, it’ll be too late to get your popcorn due to chaos in the streets, “martial” law, budget cuts, climate change, and the fact that the popcorn place is no longer open because Pedro and his friends headed south of the border. 🙂 #PedrosPopcorn
