Mayor Hubris

‘I will be the most open mayor in the history of Sioux Falls’ – Mike Huether

Of course I was paraphrasing, but Mr. Openness talked about this all the time during the campaign because he often took Staggers ideas and repackaged them with a smile;

“As we have discussed, the items you requested were part of the drafts of notes and recommendations which were used as part of the deliberative process during discussions with different members of the City Council regarding the possible Events Center,” Cotter wrote in an email denying the request.

“The initial notes and recommendations are items that are specifically exempt by law from disclosure,” he wrote.

Huether campaigned on a platform of government openness earlier this year, but he has refused to share the presentation with the public.

Mike, you really look stupid with this one. And throwing your whipping boy out there to make excuses for you is weak.

Is Huether hiding secret drawlings?

I could care less about him already having plans drawn up;

A day after the Sioux Falls City Council approved $500,000 toward a new events center, city officials aren’t revealing drawings or other information that Mayor Mike Huether showed councilors in closed-door meetings.

During those gatherings, small groups of councilors were shown a presentation with drawings of the location and other details of Huether’s vision for a $99.5 million events center.

Who cares. What bothers me is that he lied to the citizens in a public meeting about ‘Not having a plan’ and even worse five councilors jump on board with a plan based on a lie. Mike says a lot of crazy shit, whatever, but lying to the public is uncool. It may have worked in the CC industry, it doesn’t fly in the public sector.

I said it during the campaign, and Huether has proved me right, he has never had an Events Center plan

Huether’s Event Center Plan

Gotcha! Huether finally admits that all his bullshit spin and talky-talk was just that;

“There has been no plan presented. There’s been none. There’s only been dialogue in terms of a potential vision of what it could be,” he said.

The dialogue – much of which Huether shared with councilors behind closed doors – included the $99.5 million facility to be built near the Arena and possibly tearing up nearly half of Earl McCart Fields for parking. The plan will also require a public vote. As residents discussed support and concern about a downtown location Monday night, there was confusion about what location the $500,000 would study. Jamison asked Huether for clarification about the location.

“There has been no plan presented to the people,” Huether responded. “So Councilor Jamison I can’t answer your questions because there is no plan.”

“So then to be crystal clear, this $500,000 is essentially another study,” Jamison said.

Like I said to Mike on a repeated basis in emails and on this website, he has NEVER had an Events Center plan, and finally, once put up against the wall by Jamison and Brown he had to admit it.

And what’s up with Hildy stealing Carter’s thunder?

This was a logo I designed for Carter in July.

I’m trying to figure out how this group came from nowhere? Who is really behind it? Hildy? Huether? This is a little suspicious to me. Their first post was August 28th;

Steven C. Hildebrand Downtown is a great entertainment district. Restaurants, bars, clubs, shopping and lots to do. Washington Pavilion, Falls Park, special events and soon, the re-opening of the Historic State Theatre. This is where the Events Center should be!

Was our local newspaper turned into a Pro Events Center propaganda piece today?

“A downtown events center will benefit not only downtown businesses, but also all businesses that are along the main roadways into downtown. The more options you give people in and out, the more they will explore them. This is where we will miss out if we build anywhere but downtown.” – Dave Syverson

Like we didn’t hear enough about the Events Center during the campaign, we get to hear about it more today in the Gargoyle Leader. And I’m not talking about couple of stories, I’m talking about SEVERAL stories.

Here’s one about building it Downtown.

Here’s another about the low-ball cost.

Here’s yet another about the private meetings.

This one is about readers spurting off;

And this one is about all the questions that still remain.

Tired yet?

Well my favorite (that really doesn’t have to do with the Events Center) is Beck’s editorial about Mayor Hubris.

For one thing, like our friend The Road Runner, he comes across as self-assured to a fault. Back in July, meeting with the board of directors of the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce, Huether asked them to imagine what could get done in Sioux Falls if there were “two of me.”

Yes, just imagine.

And occasionally his self-analysis seems, well, a bit generous. As he told our reporter Megan Luther: “The one comment that I hear over and over again is, ‘Mayor Huether, man, you are getting things done, and we really appreciate it.’ ”

He shouldn’t be so hard on himself.

The only thing that was missing is a comment about his perfect hair.

Mayor Huether’s ‘tangled web’ events center plan

According to my sources today, Mike has been holding private meetings with councilors this week about his EC plan. He has been doing it in small groups, I am assuming to trump SD open meeting laws. There is a public meeting tonight (budget working session) and as I understand it, some councilors are going to question him about the plan, and want answers before a (expected) Friday press conference on the plan. Mainly they want to know how are we gonna pay for it.

Secrecy and government don’t work together well. Spill the beans already Mike, at least to our elected officials.
