President Obama asks. “How do you want to die?”

This clip on the Maddow show the other night had me rolling, even the president could barely control his laughter after a call-in question about living wills, it just goes to show all the BS surrounding the healthcare debate;

Rachel Maddow on the GOP’s latest conspiracy theory. Republicans are trying to rally their base by painting health care reform as a way to advance assisted suicide and to literally kill old people. It would be bad enough if this were only coming from fringe groups or right wing web sites, but as Rachel notes, it’s coming straight from these politicians’ mouths.

The Republicans continue to prove that Bill Maher was right about them with this kind of talk.

Maher: This is because we don’t have a left and a right party in this country any more. We have a center right party, and a crazy party. And over the last thirty odd years, Democrats have moved to the right, and the right has moved into a mental hospital.

Beer: is there anything it can’t do?

President Obama, Dr. Henry Gates, and Sgt. James Crowley of the Caimbridge police will meet over a beer  (link opens new window) on Thursday, presumably to talk race relations.

After the whole flap about Gates’ arrest and Obama’s comment afterwards, the president has taken a completely different tack than right-wingnut pundits expected. He invited his friend and the officer who arrested them over for a beer. While I preemptively agree with the president’s detractors that this is a PR move, you have to admit it’s a brilliant one. It wasn’t a statement issued and read at a press conference, not a half-assed apology, just a simple meeting over mankind’s favorite beverage.

Now, I wonder if an invitation to have a beer would get me out of my next speeding ticket…

Obama’s Healthcare Plan; Short on Details

Kind of sounds like he is bowing to the insurance industry to me. It would be much easier for the government to provide insurance then it would be to regulate and try to control costs within the insurance industry. They are setup to make a profit, and they are not going to budge on that. What do you think?

“Even as we rescue this economy from a full-blown crisis, we must rebuild it stronger than before — and health insurance reform is central to that effort,” Obama said.

“If we do not control these costs, we will not be able to control our deficit. If we do not reform health care, your premiums and out-of-pocket costs will continue to skyrocket,” he said.

As he laid out the list of benefits that health care reform offers, he dropped a direct reference to a government-funded public health insurance option.

Until now, Obama has consistently touted the government-funded public option as competition for private insurers in expanding access to health coverage.

It was unclear if Obama changed the wording to avoid a label opposed by Republican supporters, or if he was signaling a policy shift toward a compromise being negotiated by the Senate Finance Committee to have health insurance cooperatives rather than a government-funded public option.

Republican Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa told CNN on Wednesday that the Finance Committee was not considering a public option.

Later in the news conference, Obama responded to a question about the public option by saying it was intended to “keep the insurance companies honest.”

Alison Krauss played the White House last night

Trust me, it was shocking to hear she played at the White House last night, but I will have to give props to Obama for at least picking a good country performer (of course he probably did not pick her, because I’m sure they all cringed when he quoted Garth Brooks before the performance). If you have never seen Alison and her band live, they are remarkable and one of the tightest bluegrass/country bands I have ever seen.

The below video is not of last night’s concert

Grade Obama’s first 6 months

toast-2

This is Obama, if he does not turn it up a notch

I give him a C+, but I want your grade and why.

I think Obama has been trying, but he needs to grow a sack. There wasn’t much I liked about GW Bush, but I did like when he said he was gonna do something he did it (even though it was most likely completely fucking idiotic).

Obama has started the process on many things, but hasn’t followed through yet. As Krugman has said, he needs to be more forceful;

– Iraq

– Gitmo

– Afghanistan

– Energy

– Economy

– Lobbyist Reform

He really needs to hit it hard on Healthcare reform, he cannot lose on this one. If he does, he is toast.
