Sioux Falls

Inside Town Hall • Sep 2021

Councilor Selberg starts the show off with patting himself on the back when it comes to cooperation with other local government entities. While there has been a lot of cooperation lately, there has been little interaction with the public except at the actual meetings where the decisions have already been made before the meeting even started. When it came to mask mandates, MED MJ and Covid money they didn’t bother asking citizens and business owners what they wanted they just cowed to special interests which seem to be at city hall quite a bit behind closed doors. This is NOT true open government and cooperation. I also was a bit confused about how road money is being spent. If you walk or ride your bike around the core neighborhoods you would think you are in Baghdad, the roads look like they have been hit with mortar rounds. A Pettigrew Heights resident told me yesterday that there is no intention of fixing core neighborhood roads until 2023 and this is why the public works department doesn’t even bother with maintenance in that neighborhood.

I’m sorry, but when I hear about Federal money going towards butterfly houses and tennis courts it infuriates me. I have long argued lifting up and fixing our core neighborhoods should be the number one infrastructure priority. Not only does it help with combatting crime and poverty, it would be an enormous driver in supplying affordable housing and local construction jobs. The ROI with such an endeavor would be gigantic. Councilor Brekke actually brings it up during the episode. But instead we throw money at Foreign Egg Roll factories and more unneeded parking ramps.

Councilor Soehl brings up that it is hard for developers to build an affordable house. Hogwash. We could change zoning in Sioux Falls to allow half lots in the core. We could also build tiny houses or smaller one bedroom homes with NO garages.

The regular citizen in Sioux Falls no longer has a seat at the table. This is because apparently it costs $120k to win a city council race by 99 votes. Follow the money. If your last name doesn’t start with an S or L you are screwed.

Mayor TenHaken wants to hear from non-voting minors instead voting adults

While the premise of Mayor Poops youth council is actually a great idea, I do find it wreaks of hypocrisy;

“One key group we are missing to help solve these issues is yours, and we need you to be part of the Mayor’s Youth Council. Youth voices matter in Sioux Falls because you are our future. I want to hear from you on important issues that affect our community,” said Mayor Paul TenHaken.

What is really missing is Paul interacting with VOTING ADULTS in this community. Almost every policy he has pushed forward has been organized behind closed doors, like Med MJ. How about an Adult Council to go along with the Youth Council? Better yet, bring them both together to discuss issues. That would be a true shot of reality for these kids and the adults.

It’s easy to have open meetings with youth, because they really have NO say in our elections and Paul doesn’t have to do squat with their ideas. This is all smoke and mirrors to hide his true obsession, being Sioux Falls’ #1 Youth Pastor.

Like I said, this is a great way to interact with the youth of our city, but Paul should probably do a dry run with the big kids before trying to brainwash the youth of this city.

UPDATE: Covid Prevention and West Nile

Lately the city has been posting like mad men on Facebook about how spraying for mosquitos is safe, the problem is they still have failed to explain to citizens why they are spraying pesticides on people in broad daylight. One citizen even nicely asked in the thread, “What is the name of the product or the chemicals you are using?” The city rep responded, “We will get back to you.” I checked yesterday and not only has the question NOT been answered the question was deleted. Interesting.

UPDATE: The city did respond, the Active ingredient Permethrin, which can cause health issues.

According to Health Canada, it “may pose a risk to aquatic organisms, bees, beneficial insects and birds.”

Inhaling Permethrin can irritate the nose, throat and lungs. â–º Exposure to Permethrin can cause headache, dizziness, fatigue, excessive salivation, muscle weakness, nausea and vomiting. â–º Permethrin may affect the liver.

But this isn’t about the censoring efforts on the city’s FB page, this is about the comparison of West Nile prevention to Covid Prevention.

The city spends oodles of money each year spraying for mosquitos for the prevention of West Nile. So far this year, one person has died from the disease (not sure if they were a SF resident). While these prevention measures are appreciated, in reality there is a lot of things you can do to protect yourself without the city blanketing our vegetable gardens with pesticides and killing beneficial bugs. The irony of all the prevention we do with skiters and a disease that kills very few compared to what we have done in our city for Covid prevention. Even though the FEDS handed us $50 million to do something about it,  we are going to spend that money on butterflies instead (but not the butterflies we kill with skiter spraying).

As we are going to peak again, the city’s health director, Dr. Chima said in a press conference yesterday (in which Mayor Poops did NOT attend-must have been rearranging his medals and trucker hats in his garage) that only 50% of SF residents are fully vaccinated and another 6% have at least one dose. So what has been going on with the covid vaccination education program? While citizens have NO SAY on whether they can spray us down with pesticides  they have been doing very little to encourage people to get a FREE and EFFECTIVE and SAFE vaccination, in which they have a choice to get. TV, radio, billboards and YouTube should be cluttered in this town with PSAs about the importance of vaccinations. Cricketts (they apparently are not affected by skiter spraying).

Seems bizarre to me all the energy and treasure we are spending on a disease that kills very few* while blowing Covid money on play things. The city has probably spent more money combatting EAB (Emerald Ash Boer) then combatting Covid.

I am still baffled how Covid and vaccinations have become so political and it doesn’t help that the people who have made it political (the Trumplicans) are running our city and state. It’s too bad there isn’t a vaccination for elected officials preventing ignorance, that would likely save more lives then a Covid vaccination.

*I do support West Nile prevention, I just think we can do it more organically and take on some individual responsibility.

Siouxfalls.org search option has poor functionality

I have noticed over the past month that the search option on the city’s website doesn’t really work that well anymore (I’m sure the IT wizards with the city have been tinkering with it so they can provide less transparency. Soon they will change the name of the site to, thepeoplesrepublicofsiouxfalls.org). But there is a easier and quicker way to search for stuff on Siouxfalls.org and it works for almost any website that has poor search functionality.

In google type the name of the site you wish to search, with a colon, and what you are searching for, example;

Siouxfalls.org: salaries

I found this is the fastest and easiest way to find stuff on the city website.
