Sioux Falls

Just because you say something doesn’t make it so

I used to say this when the last mayor would make ridiculous statements like this;

But this is NOT from the last mayor, it is from the current one. It’s one of the several statements he released today in his 2nd term manifesto. I’m not going to link it, you can look for it if you want to read this rambling piece of trash of broken cruise control government promises.

Just look where he rates transparency (even if he pretends to be concerned) #8 out of #12 (at least it is ahead of affordable housing (I guess he dropped the accessible monicker).

The core of any strong relationship is openness and honesty. Once either of those come into question, a relationship starts to lose trust.

He made this promise in 2018 and over the past 4 years he has proven that the trust in government has faltered because he did NOT follow his own promise. He has kept information not only from the public, but from the council, he has shut down city hall and has it guarded by armed security officers. He has frequently concocted policy in secret meetings. He has refused to do several on camera interviews with the media only to have his staffers release vague statements and when he does have a press conference he tells us, ‘I didn’t sign up for this’. He has driven public input to the end of the meetings while leaving the 3 minute compromise in place;

I’ve worked very hard to improve the decorum and pace of City Council meetings while still expanding public input opportunities. Our meetings today are much more efficient in conducting the business of the city and bringing a professionalism that was previously beginning to wane.

I was unaware that government interaction with citizens is supposed to be efficient and pleasant. In fact the messier and louder the public discussion is, the more that is vetted and accomplished. Coming to a rubber stamp conclusion in total darkness is the exact opposite of open government.

Besides failing at many of his promises over the past 4 years, this is Paul’s most egregious. He is paranoid and scared of the public and views an informed citizenry as dangerous. What is dangerous is an uninformed citizenry who is consistently left in the dark. If there was ever a reason to not give this person 4 more years it would be his WAR on open and transparent government in his first term. And if you think things are dark now, you wait to see just how more closed city government will get if we don’t get a well balanced city council elected on April 12th.

Sioux Falls Slumlords; The Tale of Two Cities

I have been aware of this situation for awhile from seeing it on FB, but never realized just how bad it was;

Roach infestations, mold and broken security doors, leading to homeless encampments. Those are just a few of the issues that low-income tenants are facing living in various properties in Sioux Falls owned by Tzadik Management.

Part of the issue is that code enforcement and the health department really doesn’t enforce much of anything unless you are a lowly homeowner;

“We have a pretty good rapport with the regional managers from Tzadik and the property maintenance staff from the city and they seem to address it pretty quickly,” Tobias said.

Yeah, I bet you have a pretty good rapport, which means turn the other cheek. I heard during the pandemic when most city employees were hiding in their basements, few inspections were happening. I have been complaining about the complex/lot at 15th and Cliff for years which consists of several empty buildings with roofs falling in, and two abandoned houses all owned by the same person and the city has done little to nothing. But they did show up in my neighborhood to spray my sidewalk in front of my house for a ¼ inch crack. Git R’ Done!

This is a prime example of the tale of two cities. While we have tax payer incentivized condos and parking ramps going up downtown, we have a crumbling housing system in our core that has been going on since I moved here in 1991. The city leaders and staff just turn the other way. There has also been a rumor circulating that affordable housing in our core is being hoarded and not being rented out or sold for rehabilitation.

When I hear our current elected officials talk about the housing crisis in Sioux Falls and all the fabulous things that are going to do, I know better. I am pretty sure if they can’t figure out a minor roach infestation, they are going to really struggle rebuilding the core.

I encourage people to vote for Brekke, Reistroffer, Ingle and Pam Cole in the upcoming election if they want to see a council that will work on these issues.

The City of Sioux Falls hasn’t supplied a sample ballot before early voting starts on March 28th

In some kind of bizarro world the city clerk’s office has yet to provide citizens a sample ballot on the city website to download and view before early voting starts next Monday. How are people supposed to study a ballot before voting? I was able to find the sample ballot for MY district (Central) by clicking thru several links and putting in my voter registration information on the SOS website, but it is missing the entire ballot (SE District). You will also notice that for some strange reason they have decided to make it a 2-sided ballot even though everything WOULD fit on the front side. I have been a graphic designer long enough to know that spacing (leading) could have been adjusted to make it fit, but notice they but the controversial lawyer amendment on the back side. How many people will turn it over to vote?

The rumor is the ballot will not print in the local newspaper until about a week before the election with early voting already occurring.

I have also noticed that the media has decided to do mayoral debates only about a week before the election. I think by this time most people have made up their minds.

I think they are trying to discourage early and absentee voting and new voter registration which also expires on March 28th. Make no mistake this is part of the war on transparency this city has been engaged in for years.

The League of Women Voters of Sioux Falls along with the Siouxland Libraries is sponsoring a Voter Registration Event this Saturday, March 26th, 3:00 – 5:00 PM at the downtown library.
People can ask their questions about voting, learn about upcoming elections, check their registration or register to vote right there on the spot.— just in time. Monday is the last day to register for voting in the April 12 city election.
Refreshments and kids activity too.
