State Legislature

Egyptian Trade Delegation Schedule of Events

Democratic State Lawmaker, Saba, has organized a trade delegation;

“There is a lack of access for South Dakota agricultural products and services in international markets” observed SD State Representative Michael Saba (Dist. 9) after recently returning from a trip abroad.  Saba decided to do something about it.

This Sunday, November 3, a delegation of Egyptian officials will be in South Dakota for four days attempting to buy 10,000 metric tons of soybeans and other products.

“This trip shows South Dakota can compete in the world markets but we need a better marketing infrastructure to make this an everyday occurrence” Saba added.

Egyptian Ambassador Hamdi Saleh and his distinguished delegation will be touring Eastern South Dakota including the cities of Sioux Falls on Monday, Brookings on Tuesday with Watertown and  Aberdeen on Wednesday.

“The delegation is visiting South Dakota in an attempt to open our state’s high tech and agriculture industries to the marketplaces of Egypt and we are inviting the people of our state including the media to join us in welcoming our distinguished guests” said Saba.

Is Stehly looking at a run for the State Legislature?

There has been a rumor circulating that Stehly is considering a run for District 14 Senate. Deb Soholt will be term limited so Stehly could run for that seat in 2020.

As we both know, Stehly hasn’t decided to run for re-election on the city council, so maybe a run for the state legislature is more appealing to her. Even though Theresa would most likely run as a Republican, you can be sure she would work across the aisle to do the people’s work.

Rep. Jon Hansen, Hypocrite of the Week

I love it when Republican SD Legislators argue against out-of-state influence when it is convenient for their agenda. Hansen said this about out-of-state petitioners and petitions that originate out of state;

We need to end the stream of lawless, out-of-state special interests trying to use our state as a guinea pig for their political agendas.

But Jon takes NO ISSUE with money and help from out-of-state if it supports the GOP’s twisted agenda;

Of course, such venom is reserved for organizations that threaten South Dakota’s GOP super majority. It was perfectly fine for out-of-state special interest group Americans for Prosperity (and ALEC), backed by the Koch Brothers, to wage an aggressive battle against IM 22 to the tune of $650,000, not to mention the steady legislative influence of far-right Christian groups such as the Family Heritage Alliance.

 Not only is Jon a hypocrite, he is also extremely ignorant.

Sioux Falls City Council does not need to raise property taxes

Besides the fact that the county and school district are going opt-out crazy (even though the SFSD has a $11 Billion in valuations and we are looking at another record year in building permits) the city council gets to vote on property tax increases at the end of September (historically).  The state allows between 2%-3%. Last year the council voted 7-1 to increase it by 2.1% (Stehly was the lone NO vote).

Yesterday during the city council meeting, councilor Pat Starr pointed out that while the city only needs a 25% reserve fund they have around 38%.

There really is NO viable reason the city needs to vote for this increase. It will be interesting to see how the city council votes on this increase since I can’t remember the last time it has ever been voted down. I think it has passed every single year for at least the last decade.

We all know that the RS5 rarely votes for the citizens, so it will be fun to listen to their reasons why they need to vote for this unneeded increase. I have often argued with record growth in our city (and valuations) we shouldn’t have to increase the percentage the city taxes.
